An Analysis of Student’s Need in Learning English (a Study at Junior high School In Bone Regency)

This thesis discusses An Analysis of Student's Need in Learning English (a Study at
Junior High School In Bone Regency). The objective of this research is to find out
what students need in learning English at Junior High School in Bone Regency. This
research is a descriptive qualitative research with case study design. The data
collection techniques used were interviews, and documentation. The data analysis
used is qualitative data analysis with three stages: data reduction, data display, and
conclusion or verification. The results showed that 1) students often experience
difficulties when learning English, especially in understanding vocabulary,
pronunciation and translation of words or sentences, 2) there are many kinds of
learning styles that students want, 3) learning media that students want to easily
understand the material, 4) learning resources that students need when learning
English vary, 5) English learning so far is enough to make students understand the
material but there are some students who have not mastered the material at all, 6)
learning resources used at school such as whiteboards, markers, modules, package
books, ppt, and projectors, 7) the learning methods used are quite helpful for students
in understanding the material, 8) all skills really need to be improved in students. 9)
each teaching material has its own advantages and disadvantages, 10) the teaching
materials used greatly affect the students' English learning process.
A. Conclusion
From the results of research and discussion, the following conclusions can be
drawn:
1. English language learning needs of students in junior high school are seen from
the target needs. Students have difficulties when understanding vocabulary,
pronunciation of words and translation of words or sentences. The various ways
of learning English that students want are by occasionally using English in the
classroom during the learning process, memorizing some English vocabulary at
each meeting, learning in an open room, and being given ice breaking between
lessons. Media that students want to use in the learning process are audio,
images/video, and other interesting media. Learning resources needed by students
in learning are storybooks, animated videos/cartoons, and learning resources from
the surrounding environment/outside the classroom.
2. English learning needs of students in junior high school are seen from learning
needs. English learning in class so far according to students is quite helpful in
understanding learning material, students feel comfortable learning because they
have a cool teacher, learning feels boring because they only stay in the
classroom. Learning resources used by students when learning consist of
textbooks, projectors, dictionaries, teaching modules and powerpoints.Through
the learning methods carried out, it has an impact on student understanding,
students understand the learning material because at the end of each lesson the
teacher usually repeats the material that day, there is some material that has been
understood by students and some that students have not understood until now.
The media that are often used by teachers during the learning process are
whiteboards, projector markers and power points.The assessment used by
formative and summative assessment and assessing students when solving
problems in the group learning process, assessing students' critical thinking when
students self-learning. The advantages and disadvantages of teaching materials
used by teachers, namely modules have the advantage of being able to provide
feedback to students and have shortcomings in the seriousness of students in
using modules, the advantages of package books can use them without the need
for other assistance tools, the shortcomings lie in students not being free to use
package books when outside school, the advantages of power point can show
slides in the form of important points on learning material, the shortcomings lie
in the use of electricity. The teaching materials used by the teacher certainly
affect student learning if the teaching materials used can be adequate, student
interest in learning and learning outcomes can increase.
Based on the explanation above, researcher can conclude that students' needs
are divided into two, namely Target Needs and Learning Needs. Based on the results
of Target Needs, students have difficulties in understanding vocabulary,
pronounciation of words, and translation of words sentences while they are learning
English. The solution that researcher can provide from this problem is that the
learning media, learning resources and learning methods desired by students can be
fulfilled. Then seen from Learning Needs while learning English, some students feel
that the learning process in the classroom is fun so that students can receive the
material well, but there are also those who feel that learning in the classroom is bored
because students always study in the classroom, the solution that can be given by the
researcher is that it is better to provide a varied learning model such as learning in an
open room or learning resources from the surrounding environment that can make
students' minds fresher so that learning material can be understood well by students.
B. Suggestion
1. The researcher hopes that the results of this study can help teachers in improving
student learning. The researcher also hopes that the results of this study can be
useful for teachers and students, especially at the junior high school level.
2. Based on the results of the analysis of student needs in English language learning,
students need a variety of methods, media, and learning resources. It is
recommended that teachers and schools can consider the methods, media, and
learning resources that students want to be applied at school.
3. The last suggestion is related to learning activities. The results of this study are
student needs show that students want varied learning methods, media, and
resources, because in general students do have different ways of learning. Then
relevant and interesting activities for each skill are suggested, it is also suggested
to teach the whole class to stimulate students' cooperative activities and increase
their enthusiasm for learning.
4. Researcher hopes that future research can be better than this research. The
researcher realizes that there are still several shortcomings in this research that
can be completed in further research. One of them is by making the interview
questions more branched so that the data obtained can be varied and more
complete.
