Teaching English Writing through YouTube Videos as Tutorial and Assisted Learning Media for Indonesian Junior High School

The purpose of this study was to describe students' perceptions on the use of
YouTube in junior high schools in Indonesia as well as to understand how to teach
writing using YouTube videos as tutorial and supporting media. Research was
conducted using a qualitative method. There were 5 participants in this study, and
there were 6 meetings. Both observation and a questionnaire are used for data
collecting. Then, content analysis is used in data analysis to solve research questions.
Based on qualitative data, students' actions in the learning process have increased.
The results showed that there was a positive influence on students' English skills by
using YouTube videos as tutorial and assisted learning media. At first, students had
difficulty to understand English vocabulary, words with different pronunciations and
different writings. However, after the teacher repeated the video several times, the
students slowly understood it and they were interested in learning. Then students
enjoy learning because it is a challenge for them. Based on the results of observations
and questionnaires, it shows that YouTube videos as tutorial and assisted learning
media have a lot of positive impacts on students, such as: students are more useful in
learning, increase student insight, and students can add new vocabulary. They also
learn with enthusiasm in teaching and learning activities. There are also disadvantages
when the network is bad. However, this can be overcome because based on a
questionnaire that YouTube videos can improve students' English writing skills. It can
be noted that the next researcher applied and researched YouTube video as tutorial
and assisted learning media intensively for other English skills.
A. Conclusion
Based on the results of the analysis and discussion in the previous chapter,
finally the researcher can conclude about YouTube as tutorial and assisted media in
learning writing. Conclusion of this study the following description:
1. The teacher should prepare themselves before teaching and then students
will enjoy the learning process because they have interesting activities.
YouTube learning will be a good assisted learning when the teacher has the
strategy to support the improvement of students’ skill. The students can
develop their writing skill.
2. Students' perceptions of learning through YouTube are visible more positive
than negative comments on the questionnaire that are distributed like
students are interested learning process because they feel challenged.
YouTube also has short comings; students sometimes get into difficulties
such as they don’t know how to write the sentences. But, if the video is
played more than one, the students can understand.
B. Suggestion
In basic knowledge of English, students need a lot of practice and use several
media that can help students learn English. Students need media that is attractive and
easy to apply and of course loaded on smart phones such as learning through
YouTube Application so that students can easily learn anywhere and anytime.
However, the researcher recommends that the teacher should prepare a simple
learning material in order the students can understand it easily so not only improve
writing skill and the students must more pay attention in learning process. The
researcher hopes that the next researcher can prepare everything as good as possible
in conducting the research and can do the follow up of this research.
