Analyzing Students' English Speaking Ability through Storytelling by Making Video on YouTube at The Eleventh Grade of SMA Negeri 12 Bone

This research discusses the analysis of students' speaking ability through
storytelling by making videos on YouTube at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 12
Bone in the 2021/2022 academic year. This research aims to determine how students'
speaking ability in storytelling videos on YouTube and students' perceptions when
using the YouTube application in making storytelling videos are carried out on
students in class XI MIPA 2 SMA Negeri 12 Bone. This research belongs to
qualitative method. Purposive sampling was used as sampling technique in this
research, where the sample took ten students. Data collection was done by
observation and interview. The researcher of this research analyzed the data by means
of reduction, display, and drawing conclusions/ verification. Based on the research
results the students’ speaking ability in storytelling videos on YouTube turns out that
there are still many students whose abilities are lacking when viewed from the five
aspects of the assessment. However, most of them said that there was a slight
improvement in the aspects of pronunciation and vocabulary. Students' perceptions
when using YouTube as a medium for uploading storytelling videos, it is quite an
innovative way and good because of its practicality, it also provides privacy features
for uploaded videos. Students think it is suitable in the learning process especially
speaking, because YouTube application is easy to use and access by students. As in
this research, where students themselves can see their speaking ability through the
video on YouTube that their abilities have a little improved
A. Conclusion
Based on the findings and discussion in the previous chapter, the researcher
can draw conclusions about students' speaking abilities through storytelling by
making videos on YouTube at the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 12 Bone.
1. Students’ speaking ability in the video of storytelling on YouTube base on the
observations and interviews with students regarding that it turns out that there are
still many students whose abilities are lacking when viewed from the five aspects
of the assessment. However, most of them say that there is an increase and
students' desire to improve their speaking ability for various different reasons.
2. Students’ perception when using YouTube as a medium for uploading storytelling
videos based on the interview it is quite an innovative way and good because of
its practicality, it also provides privacy features for uploaded videos. Students
think it is suitable in the learning process especially speaking, because YouTube
application is easy to use and access by students. As in this research, where
students themselves can see their speaking ability through the video on YouTube
that their abilities have a little improved.
B. Suggestion
Considering the conclusions above, some suggestions are presented in this
part. This research is expected to contribute practical and theoretical values, therefore
the researcher would like to give some suggestions to teachers, students, and other
researchers.
1. For teachers, should pay more attention to the aspects of students' speaking
abilities and give them more speaking practice so that students are more confident
in their English skills. Teachers are also expected to be able to provide good
learning techniques and must be able to use other learning media such as
YouTube applications and other applications. So that it attracts students' interest
in learning more and makes learning more fun.
1. For students, especially the eleventh graders of MIPA 2 at SMA Negeri 12 Bone,
from the observations the researchers saw that you have potential in speaking
English, you just need to improve. Regarding self-confidence, it must be
improved, there is nothing wrong with your current abilities because everything
requires a process. Continue to practice in improving English language skills,
especially speaking by paying attention to the five aspects, and also in other
learning. Make the best use of the YouTube application in your learning process,
because you are in an era where technology is increasingly sophisticated and
developing, so improve your skills.
2. For other researchers, it is recommended that other researchers can use the results
of this study as a source of information or reference in conducting research on the
same topic with the same method. Or if possible, it is also hoped that other
researchers can take advantage of various applications in the learning process as
suggested by the eleventh grade students of Mathematics and Natural Sciences 2
in the previous chaptER.
