This thesis presents research about Engaging the Students’ English
Argumentative Writing Proficiency Through Documentary Film at the Sixth
Semester of English Study Program of IAIN Bone. The research was conducted at the
sixth semester especially at the group 3 of English study program of IAIN Bone.
This research is classroom action research. It is the way of reflecting on
teaching which is done systematically by collecting data on every meeting practice in
a class and analyzing in order to come to some decisions about what the future
practice should be. The researches consisted of pre-cycle and cycle I, with one
meeting on pre-cycle and four meetings on cycle I. There are two types of data in the
research, namely the quantitative and qualitative data which collected by observation,
test and interview. The result of this research showed that using documentary film can
improve the students’ English argumentative writing proficiency. This is proven by
students’ test score that improved in every cycle. In the pre-cycle the score of class
percentage was 30.76% and in the cycle I, the score of class percentage was 100%.
From the data could be concluded that teaching English argumentative writing by
using documentary film media can engage the students’ English argumentative
writing and improve the students’ proficiency in studying English argumentative
writing of the group 3 of the sixth semester of English study program of IAIN Bone.

Bahasa Inggris Siswa Melalui Film Dokumenter pada Semester Keenam Program Studi Bahasa Inggris
IAIN Bone. Penelitian dilakukan pada semester enam khususnya pada kelompok 3 program studi
Bahasa Inggris IAIN Bone. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas. Ini adalah cara merefleksikan pengajaran yang dilakukan secara sistematis dengan mengumpulkan data pada setiap praktik pertemuan di kelas dan menganalisis untuk mencapai beberapa keputusan tentang apa praktik masa depan yang seharusnya. Penelitian ini terdiri dari pra-siklus dan siklus I, dengan satu pertemuan pada pra-siklus dan empat pertemuan pada siklus I. Ada dua jenis data dalam penelitian, yaitu data kuantitatif dan kualitatif yang
dikumpulkan dengan observasi, tes dan wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan film dokumenter dapat meningkatkan kemampuan menulis argumentatif berbahasa Inggris siswa. Ini terbukti dengan skor tes siswa yang meningkat di setiap siklus. Pada pra-siklus skor persentase kelas adalah 30,76% dan pada siklus I, skor persentase kelas adalah 100%. Dari data tersebut dapat disimpulkan bahwa pengajaran menulis argumentatif bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan media film dokumenter dapat melibatkan penulisan argumentatif
bahasa Inggris siswa dan meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam mempelajari tulisan argumentatif
bahasa Inggris dari kelompok 3 semester enam program studi Bahasa Inggris IAIN Bone .
A. Conclusion
Having implemented documentary film as the media to engaging the students’
argumentative writing proficiency, the researcher would like to present three
conclusions as follows:
1. Using documentary film as the media can improve the students’
argumentative writing proficiency. The improvement of students’ argumentative
writing can be identified from the improvement of the students’ argumentative
writing proficiency through documentary film based on the mean score of the data
from pre-cycle and cycle I. The successful of this research could be clearly seen from
the class percentage that passed minimum criteria of mastery learning (KKM). There
were only four students’ or 30.76% who got the score passed KKM in pre-cycle and
thirteen students’ or 100% who got the score passed KKM.
2. The strength of the implementation of documentary film as the media is that it
can raise students’ participation in writing class and it can engage the students’
argumentative writing proficiency. However, the implementation of some material or
films needs some preparations, especially in choosing interesting topics or theme
which are not only suitable to the theme but also suitable to the curriculum and
students’ need.
B. Suggestions
Having implemented documentary film as the media to engaging the students’
argumentative writing proficiency, the researcher would like to present some
suggestions as follows:
1. It is strongly suggested that using documentary film in teaching English
argumentative writing be continually implemented in IAIN Bone in order to avoid
monotonous material.
2. In using documentary film, lecturer should make extra preparation starting
from the selection of materials which should be suitable to the students and
curriculum to be used in the class.
