The Use of Show and Tell Technique to Improve Students’ Speaking Ability at the Fourth Semester of English Study Program of IAIN Bone

The objectives of this research are: (1) to improve students’ speaking ability
and (2) to know the students’ interest in learning speaking through Show and Tell
technique. The problem statements of this research are: Does the use of Show and
Tell technique improve students’ speaking ability at the Fourth Semester of English
Study Program of IAIN Bone and are the students interested in learning speaking by
using Show and Tell technique.
This research used quantitative method with pre-experimental design. The
population of this research was the fourth semester of IAIN Bone, selected using
cluster sampling. The sample of this research was 19 students. The researcher gave
pre-test, treatment, post-test and questionnaire.
The result of the data showed that the mean score obtained by the students in
the post-test (16,05) is greater than the mean score of the students in pre-test (12,00).
It is proven by the result of data analysis after being compared to the t-table (2.101)
with t-test (17,218). The test result indicates that the use of Show and Tell technique
have significant difference between the result of the students’ pre-test and post-test.
The other finding is from the questionnaire, which shows that the students are
interested in the use of Show and Tell technique in learning speaking. Based on the
students score of questionnaire, it is found that 4 students (21,06) get very high
category and 15 students (78,94) get high category.
A. Conclusion
Based on the result of the analysis in the previous chapter, the researcher
would like to make conclusions as follows:
1. Studying speaking through Show and Tell technique is one technique that can
improve the students’ speaking ability. It can be seen of the students’ at the
fourth semester of English Study Program of IAIN Bone, that they have prior
ability of speaking before applying Show and Tell technique is still low.It can be
seen clearly, the score of pre-test most of students get fairly poor score 3
(15,79%), fair 10 score (52,63%)and fairly good score 6 (31,58%). Thus, in the
pre-test most of the students still get low score with mean score of students’ pretest
is (12,00). In the post-test after giving treatment by applying Show and Tell
technique in teaching speaking most of the students get very good score 7
(36,84%), good score 9 (47,37%) and fairly good score 3 (15,79). Thus, in posttest
most of the students get high score with mean score of students’ post-test is
(16,05). Thus, using Show and Tell technique in teaching speaking is influence
the students’ speaking achievement.
2. The students’ interest in studying speaking through Show and Tell technique is
very high. The students are very highly motivate in studying speaking by using
Show and Tell technique. The students’ interestis prove based on their answer in
questionnaire.4 students get very high motivate. It means that (21,06%) o
19students very high motivate because of using Show and Tell technique in
teaching speaking and 15 students get high motivate. It means that (78,94% ) of
19 students. It can be says that few of the fourth semester in group3of
EnglishStudy Program students of IAIN Boneget high motivate because of using
Show and Tell technique in teaching speaking.
B. SUGGESTIONS
The researcher gives suggestions to all readers and especially for
teachers, instructors and students that:
1. For the improvement of the teaching English, the researcher suggests to the
English teacher especially speaking, the teachermust give a good method in
teaching English based on te students’ motivation and the teacher must be
creative in creating the teaching learning activities, the teacher must focus on
teaching learning strategis, not only focus on transferring information. Using the
Show and Tell technique is able to improve students’ speaking ability.
2. The students can improve their speaking ability pass practice every moment
and (2) to know the students’ interest in learning speaking through Show and Tell
technique. The problem statements of this research are: Does the use of Show and
