The Use of Round Table Technique to Improve Students’ Speaking Skill at the Eighth Grade of MTs Al-Hidayah Bakke

The purpose of this research was to know whether there was an improvement of
speaking skill after applying Round Table technique. The sample of this research was
the students of the eighth grade of MTs Al-Hidayah Bakke. They were selected by
cluster sampling that consists of 10 students to study English by using Round Table
technique as a treatment. This research was a quantitative research, which used
experimental study as a research design. Most of students could speak English but
they could not speak with good performance. The main problem are they still forgot
some vocabularies, sometimes they used the wrong pronunciation and they also were
still influenced by their vernacular dialect that made them could not speak naturally.
Regarding the data analysis, this research used test as instrument. Test was used to
know the improvement of students speaking score after applying Round Table
technique. It find that there is a difference between pre-test and post-test significantly.
It can be seen the mean score of students‟ pre-test was 63,60 and improve to be 79,40
in post-test. Before giving treatment, there are 10 students or about 100% it means
that it includes all of the sample get score start from < 75. The classification of the
score is Fair category. While after giving the treatment, there were 2 (20%) students
got Good category in speaking skill, 7 (70%) students were categoried as Average,
and 1 (10%) student was categoried as Fair. No one of students was classified as
Excellent category. It assumes that the use of Rount Table technique can improve
student‟s spaking skill of the eighth grade of MTs Al-Hidayah Bakke.
A. Conclusion
Based on the data analysis and discussion above, the researcher came to
conclusions. The researcher got closer to the fact that Round Table technique could
improve students‟ speaking skill as the answer of the problem statement. It was got
from the applying of research instrument that had been applied including speaking
test. According to the result of test (pre-test and post-test) which had been include
speaking test to the students, the researcher concluded that there was an improvement
score from the pre-test to the post-test. The mean score of pre-test was 63,60 and
improved to be 79,40 in post-test. It showed that the mean score students‟ of pre-test
was higher than the mean score students‟ of post-test. As the last conclusion is based
on the result of tests, the research conclude that there is an improvement of students
speaking skill after applying round table technique.
B. Suggestion
Based on the conclusion above, the researcher put some suggestion as follows:
1. For Teacher
Round Table Technique can be one alternative technique to teach
speaking, writing and also reading. The researcher also suggests that the
implementation of Round Table technique is suitable for elementary or
intermediate level especially junior or senior high school students. The
discussions topic should be appropriated to the age of the students and interesting
for them in order to get a maximum result.
2. For Students
The students are supposed to be more serious when joining the class so
that they can improve their speaking skill and also can practice without the
guidance of the teacher.
3. For Researcher
Hopefully it can be reference to doing other researcher related to the recent
research or trying to explore other ways to improve speaking skill.
