The Use of News Report to Develop Students’ Argumentative Writing Ability at The Fifth Semester of English Study Program of STAIN Watampone

The title of this research about The Use of News Report to Develop Students’
Argumentative Writing Ability at The Fifth Semester of English Study Program of
STAIN Watampone.
This research aims at finding out the significance of students’ development
and students’ interest in learning English writing by using news report at the fifth
semester of English Study Program of STAIN Watampone. This research apply preexperimental
method and quantitative method. The subject of this research are the
students at the fifth semester of English Study Program of STAIN Watampone. The
sample is chosen by applying cluster random sampling technique and it consist of 26
students from TBI group 2. The researcher give pretest, treatments, posttest, and
questionare while the data is obtained through test are analyzed with mean score and
the formula of t-test. The experimental group is given treatment by using news report
video.
The result of the analysis of the data shows that (1) news report video can
increase the quality of learning outcomes and process of writing argumentative text. It
is proved by the mean score of post-test is 84,5. The mean score of posttest is higher
than the mean score of pretest (84,5>65,7). And another research shows that (2) news
report video in teaching writing can make students interest in writing argumentative
text. It is proved by the percentage of the questionnaire score is 73% of the students
got high score.
From the data, it can be conclude that teaching writing by using news report
video can develop the students’ writing achievement and students’ interest in
studying writing of the fifth semester of English Study Program of STAIN
Watampone. Therefore, H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted.
A. Conclusion
Based on the findings and discussion above, the researcher comes to
conclusion. They are as follows:
1. The use of news report is more effective and applicable in developing the
students’ writing achievement of the fifth semester of English Education
Department of STAIN Watampone Academic Year 2016/2017.
2. The students’ interesting in studying writing by using news report is high/highly
interested.
B. Suggestions
Concerning to the conclusion above, the researcher states some suggestions as
follows:
1. The researcher suggests the teachers use the creative method to manage the
material and the classroom for teaching writing such as using news report video.
2. The researcher suggests the teachers to be creative in applying new media for
students to develop their achievement and interest in studying writing.
