The Use of STAD Technique to Improve the Students’ Listening Proficiency at the Fourth Semester of English Study Program of IAIN Bone

The objectives of this research were to find out significance of students’
improvement and students’ interest in learning English listening though STAD
technique at the fourth semester of English Study Program of IAIN Bone.
This research used quantitative method. The sample of this research was the
students at the fourth semester of English Study Program of IAIN Bone. The sample
was chosen by applying cluster sampling technique and consist of 17 students from
16 TBI 6. The research data were collected by using two kinds of instruments
namely: listening test and questionnaire.
The results of the research showed that STAD technique improved the
students’ listening achievement, it was proven by students’ mean score of post-test
was higher than the mean score of pre-test (84.70 > 64.12). And another research
showed that using STAD technique in learning listening could interest the students, it
was proven by the percentage of the questionnaire score was 76% of the students got
high score. From the data, it could be concluded that teaching listening by using
STAD technique could improve the students’ listening proficiency and interest the
students in learning English listening at the fourth semester of English Study Program
of IAIN Bone. Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu untuk menemukan peningkatan yang
signifikan dan ketertarikan mahasiswa dalam belajar Listening menggunakan teknik
STAD pada semester 4 prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris IAIN Bone.
Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif. Sampel yang diambil dari
semester 4 prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris IAIN Bone. Sampel diambil berdasarkan
teknik cluster dan terdiri atas 17 mahasiswa dari kelas 16 TBI 2. Data penelitian
dikumpulkan melalui dua jenis instrument yaitu test listening dan angket.
Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa teknik STAD meningkatkan
kemampuan mahasiswa, itu dapat dibuktikan dari nilai rata-rata nilai test awal lebih
tinggi dibandingkan nilai setelah perlakuan (84.70 > 64.12). Hasil lain yang
didapatkan pada penelitian ini yaitu teknik STAD dalam pembelajaran listening dapat
menarik minat mahasiswa, hal tersebut dapat dibuktikan dari nilai rata-rata angket
yaitu 76%. Dari data tersebut dapat disimpulkan bahwa menggunakan teknik STAD
dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dapat meningkatkan kemampuan mahasiswa dan
menarik minat mereka dalam belajar listening pada semester 4 prodi Pendidikan
Bahasa Inggris IAIN Bone.
A. Conclusion
Based on the data analysis and the discussion in the previous chapter, the
researcher concludes that:
1. STAD technique was effective to improve students’ listening achievement
of the fourth semester of English Study Program of IAIN Bone. It could be
seen from the comparison data between the mean score of post test was
significantly higher than pre test (84.70 > 64.12)
2. The students’ interest in listening through STAD technique was categorized
as highly by the mean score was 77.23. Based on their different background
in grouping though STAD technique help them in listening process.
B. Suggestions
Based on the conclusion above, the researcher addresses the following
suggestions:
1. It was suggested that STAD technique be continually implemented in
listening class, it meant to avoid monotonous technique and material
especially in teaching listening.
2. For the improvement of the teaching English, the researcher suggested to
the English teacher especially listening should give the good technique and
materials which should be suitable to the students and curriculum to be used
in the class.
