Using Rider (Read or Listen, Image, Describe, Evaluate, and Repeat) Strategy in Teaching Listening Descriptive Text at The Fourth Semester of IAIN BONE

This thesis presents research about improving students listening skill by using Rider strategy at the fourth semester of IAIN Bone. The students always find the difficults in their listening. Rider strategy is one of strategy which can help the students solve their difficulties in their listening. The problem statement of this thesis is: Does Rider strategy improve the student’s listening descriptive text at the fourth semester of English Study Program of IAIN Bone. The researcher uses quantitative method with pre- experimental design. The researcher applys cluster sampling by choosing the fourth semester of English Study Program of IAIN Bone in academic year 2017/2018. It consists of six classes with the total 150 students. This research employs a test based on the problem statement investigated, it is listening test, listening test consists of pre test was given to the students to know the students’ listening skill before applying Rider strategy and post test was given to the students to know the students’ listening skill after applying Rider strategy , while the data obtains through tests are analyzed with mean score and the significant of test. The result of the research using Rider strategy is more effective to improve students’ listening achievement at the fourth semester of English Study Program of IAIN Bone. The mean score obtaining the students’ by using Rider strategy pre-test is 56,78 and post-test is 73,67 and the students’ in learning listening through using Rider strategy at the fourth semester in TBI 5 of English Study Program of IAIN Bone get interested. It means that there is a significant difference between the result of the students pre test and post-test.
A.Conclusions
Based on the result of the analysis in the previous chapter, the researcher
would like to make conclusions. The researcher concluded that after using Rider
strategy in teaching listening descriptive text at the fourth semester of IAIN BONE.
The students’ skill was improved in learning listening through using Rider strategy at
the fourth semester of English Study Program of IAIN Bone Academic Year 2018. It
was proved by the result of students’ achievement in pre-test and post-test. It can be
seen clearly, the score of pre-test there are 8 (44%) students as fair classification in
listening test, there are 10 (56%) students as poor. Thus, in the pre-test most of the
students still get low score with mean score of students’ pre-test is (56,78). In the
post-test after giving treatment by applying Rider strategy in teaching listening there
are 6 (33%) students as good classification in listening test, there are 12 (67%)
students as fair. Thus, in post-test most of the students get high score with mean score
of students’ post-test is (73,67). Thus, using Rider strategy in teaching listening is
improved the students’ listening achievement.
The researcher assumes that the application of Rider strategy is really helful to
improve the students’ listening because there was a significant listening of the
students after the treatment was conducted. It can be seen in the result of the students’
mean score and standard deviation after treatment of post test. It indicates that there is
significant difference between the students’ listening skill after giving the treatment.
B.Suggestions
In view of the fact that descriptive text has been proved to improve the
students’ listening, the reseacher would like to give suggestions as follows:
1. The teacher is expected to know that Rider strategy can be reference in
teaching listening as one alternative teaching strategy and it is not only in
teaching listening but also for the other skill.
2. English teacher should improve their knowledge and their ability in teaching.
They should use an interesting strategy to attract students’ attention and make
the students learn comfortable and relaxed.
3. It is recommended for English teacher to apply Rider strategy as a way to
improve the students’ listening.
