Applying SWOT Analysis in Teaching English to Overcome Teachers’
Obstacles at SMKN 1 Watampone being the title of this research. It focuses on
researching how the English teacher in SMKN 1 Watampone overcome the obstacles
by SWOT Analysis.
This research uses descriptive qualitative that explained all of happened in the
location of the research relates to the teachers’ obstacles and that SWOT Analysis in
overcoming it. Observation and interview as instruments in this research to give more
information needed about the teachers’ obstacles and their ways in analyzing those
SWOT.
As the result of this research, the researcher found that teacher's equipments
and students’ English basic become the most obstacles in the classroom. The teacher's
step to overcome the obstacles by applying SWOT Analysis as follows: Firstly,
teacher classified the most obstacles in the class; Secondly, teacher made some lists
of the strengths, the weaknesses, the opportunities, and the threats: Then, the teacher
made a highlight from the weaknesses and the threats; After that, teacher took
advantages from the strengths and weaknesses to face war the weaknesses and
threats; Finally, those suitable strengths and opportunities become the solution to
overcome the obstacles.
A. Conclusions
SWOT Analysis is often being something neglected to develop learning
strategies. Whereas this SWOT Analysis puts on the important role to deal with all
possibilities that will occur, even the worst possibilities.
This research found that for English teachers in SMKN 1 Watampone, they
designed SWOT Analysis in their own mind. Their point of view that by teaching
every day those strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats are analyzed
automatically the day before coming in the classroom and meeting with the students.
This research also found that English teachers have the same obstacles.
Mostly, students’ English basic become the first obstacle among mastery, equipment,
and subject matter. Because of that students’ English basic are lacking, the motivation
of teachers’ teaching is affected. This problem being more complex by authentic
equipments are not provided, while the students will understand more when the
examples are shown more real and closer to their daily lives. In addition, the demand
for achievement of competency in comprehending the text as a whole forces teachers
to think hard in order to make the best use of their time in the classroom so that the
target of achieving competencies can go hand in hand by giving students an in-depth
understanding of the most basic English material even though the understanding
should have been built before continuing their study in the senior high school stage.
As the solution, the English teachers observed the SWOT Analysis they
design and update it every day and then focus on existing strengths also opportunities.
After that, they were thinking creatively by maximizing these strengths to cover their
weaknesses and obstacles in teaching. This research found, there are two types of
English teacher in overcoming the obstacles. The first type focuses on applying the
teaching technique and the other type is more concerned with the aspect of
psychology of the students and other students’ skill beyond their understanding of
English.
B. Implications
This SWOT Analysis puts on the important role for helping all of professions,
including the English teachers. Even though the difficulties or the obstacles are
absolutely exist in understanding individuals outside of an English teacher, the
difficulties and obstacles are not impossible to overcome.
The existing SWOT Analysis as a way to see the teachers’ internal strengths
and weaknesses also the external opportunities and threats which makes it easy for
English teachers to choose the right strategy to overcome the teaching barriers faced.
Therefore, in addition to lesson plans, SWOT analysis is something that needs to be
considered before teaching.
