The Effectiveness Of Memrise Application In Enhancing Students' English Speaking Skills

This research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Memrise, a
technology-based language learning application, in enhancing students‟ English
speaking skills. This research was conducted due to students‟ low speaking
ability, which was caused by limited speaking practice, low motivation, and lack
of engaging learning media. Memrise offers features such as native speaker audio,
gamified activities, and vocabulary reinforcement, which may enhance speaking
performance. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR)
method with a quantitative approach, conducted in two cycles involving 28
students from class XI.4 at SMAN 16 Bone. Each cycle included planning, action,
observation, and reflection. Data were collected using pre-test, post-test I, and
post-test II, focusing on four speaking aspects: pronunciation, vocabulary,
grammar, and fluency. The findings showed a consistent improvement in
students‟ speaking performance. The average score increased from 48.9 (pre-test)
to 61.78 (Cycle I) and 75.9 (Cycle II). Students progressed from the “Poor”
category to “Fair,” then to “Good” and “Very Good.” The use of Memrise
combined with role-play activities significantly improved students‟ fluency,
accuracy, and confidence. In conclusion, Memrise proved effective in enhancing
students‟ English speaking skills and is recommended as a digital tool to support
classroom-based language learning
A. Conclusion
Based on the results of the research conducted at SMAN 16 Bone
through two cycles of classroom action, it can be concluded that the use of the
Memrise application has proven effective in enhancing students' speaking
skills in English. This improvement is evident from the students' average
scores, which continued to rise in each cycle, across all aspects:
pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and fluency.
Before using the Memrise application, most students were in the
“Poor” category in terms of speaking skills. However, after two cycles of
using this application, all students achieved the “Good” and “Very Good”
categories. This shows that learning that combines technology such as
Memrise with speaking activities in the classroom can help students to be
more confident, speak more fluently, and use English with better structure.
The Memrise app provides an engaging learning experience by
offering interactive features such as audio from native speakers and
pronunciation exercises, which indirectly encourage students to practice more
independently and consistently. Additionally, the game-like elements in the
app help boost students' motivation to learn. Through repeated practice and
the use of words in context, students find it easier to understand and
remember new vocabulary.
Overall, this research proves that the use of the Memrise app in the
classroom learning process has a real positive impact on students' speaking
skills. The improvements that occur are reasonable, gradual, and demonstrate
an effective learning process.
B. Suggestions
Based on the results of this research, the researcher provides the
following suggestions:
1. For English teachers, it is recommended to start utilizing technology￾based learning applications such as Memrise to support teaching and
learning activities, especially in enhancing students' speaking skills. This
application can be an effective tool when combined with active learning
methods such as role-play or group discussions.
2. For students, using the Memrise application can be a fun and flexible
way to learn. Students are encouraged to use it independently outside of
class to continue practicing pronunciation, expanding vocabulary, and
improving confidence in speaking English.
3. For schools or related parties, it is advisable to provide support for the
use of digital learning media in the school environment. For example, by
providing sufficient internet access or guiding teachers in the use of
technology for the learning process.
4. For future researchers, it is hoped that they can develop this research by
focusing on other aspects, such as investigating the effectiveness of
Memrise in improving writing or listening skills, or applying it at
different educational levels. Further research could also combine the
Memrise app with other learning media or strategies to maximize results.
With this research, it is hoped that the use of technology in English
language learning will continue to develop and provide solutions to the
various challenges students have faced in improving their speaking skills.
