Using Intellectual Personal Assistants As Ai (Artificial Intelligence) Language Learning Tools To Improve Students' Speaking Skills

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using an artificial intelligencebased Intelligent Personal Assistant (IPA), namely Gemini AI, in improving the
speaking skills of junior high school students in English language learning. This
study uses a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design (pre-test and
post-test of one group), involving 29 eighth-grade students at SMPN 6
Watampone as subjects. Data were collected through speaking tests before and
after the intervention using Gemini AI. The results of the study indicate a
significant improvement in students' speaking scores after using Gemini AI,
particularly in the areas of pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and selfconfidence. The average score increased from 11.00 in the pre-test to 15.76 in the
post-test. The t-test showed significance of 0.000 (p < 0.05), proving that Gemini
AI is effective as a medium for learning English to improve students' speaking
skills. This study implies that the integration of AI-based technology such as
Gemini AI can be an innovative solution in teaching English that is more
interactive, adaptive, and supports student independence in learning.
A. Conclusion
Speaking is a crucial skill for junior high school students, yet many
face challenges such as low confidence, limited practice time, and fear of peer
judgment. The use of AI, particularly Gemini AI, offers an innovative
solution. As an interactive and adaptive tool, Gemini AI can support students
in improving their English-speaking skills effectively. Based on the research
results, it can be concluded that the use of Gemini AI is effective in improving
junior high school students' speaking skills. The findings show a significant
improvement, indicating that Gemini AI provides an interactive and
supportive learning experience. It helps students enhance their pronunciation,
fluency, vocabulary, and confidence in speaking English.
Theoretically, this study reinforces Interactionist Theory, which states
that meaningful interaction is crucial in second language acquisition. Gemini
AI provides a technology-based interaction space that mimics real
communication, enabling students to produce language, receive immediate
feedback, and overcome psychological barriers such as fear of making
mistakes. This study is also consistent with previous findings indicating that
the use of Intelligent Personal Assistants can enhance students' speaking skills
and learning motivation in an EFL context.
In practical terms, the use of Gemini AI provides tangible benefits in
the learning process. For teachers, this technology can be used to create a

more interactive and engaging learning environment, as well as expand
opportunities for speaking practice outside of class hours. For students,
Gemini AI provides a flexible, responsive, and safe learning experience to try
out, thereby encouraging improvement in pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary,
and sentence structure. Thus, the use of AI such as Gemini AI should be
considered as an innovative alternative in English language learning,
especially for improving speaking skills at the secondary education level.
B. Suggestion
Based on the results of this research, there are several suggestions that
can be conveyed to various related parties
1. For Teachers: Teachers are advised to utilize artificial intelligence-based
technology such as Gemini AI in the English learning process, especially
in the development of speaking skills. The use of Gemini AI is proven to
be able to create a more interactive learning atmosphere, encourage
students to be more confident in speaking, and provide immediate
feedback that helps in improving pronunciation, grammar, and speaking
fluency. Teachers can also design speaking activities that involve students'
direct interaction with Gemini AI to customize the material to each
student's ability.
2. For Students: Students are advised to actively utilize Gemini AI as an
independent practice medium in improving speaking skills. By practicing
regularly through this platform, students can expand their vocabulary,
improve their pronunciation, and increase their fluency and confidence in

using English. Students should also see this technology as a tool that can
be used at any time, without fear of judgment from others, so that they can
express themselves more freely in a foreign language.
3. For Future Researchers: Future researchers are advised to explore the use
of Gemini AI in the context of learning other language skills such as
writing, listening, or reading, as well as expanding the sample to different
education levels to obtain a more comprehensive picture. In addition,
future studies could also focus on an in-depth analysis of non-linguistic
factors such as students' motivation, anxiety level, and attitude towards the
use of AI in language learning. Long-term research is also important to see
the lasting effects of using Gemini AI on students' language skill
development.
