The Relationship Between Students' Self-Esteem And Their Speaking Ability
A. Muafiah Akil/882032021004 - Personal Name
This research was aimed to know and investigate the relationship between
students’ self-esteem and their speaking ability. In this research, the researcher
used quantitative method. The populations of this research were the eleventh
grade students of MAN 1 Bone. The sample of this research consisted of 30
eleventh grade students of MAN 1 Bone, specifically from class XI B, which was
selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument used to
collect data were self-esteem questionnaire and speaking test. The data was then
analyzed using Pearson Product Moment formula to determine the correlation
between the two variable. The result of this research showed that the correlation
coefficient (rxy) was 0.522, which when compared to r table (rt) with the degree of
freedom (df) 28 valued 0.361, indicated that the count value was higher than the
table value. The significance value was 0.03 which is less than 0.05, meaning that
the correlation was statistically significant. It means that the alternative hypothesis
(Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. Therefore, it can be
concluded that there was a significant positive correlation between students’ self-
esteem and their speaking ability. The level of correlation was categorized as
moderate. This finding implies that when a student has good self-esteem, the student
has good speaking ability as well. Vice versa, if a student has low self-esteem, it is
possible that the student has a poor level of speaking ability.
A. Conclusion
Based on the findings and discussion in the previous chapter, the
researcher concluded that there is significant relationship between students' self-
esteem and their speaking ability at eleventh grade in MAN 1 Bone. This is
supported by the correlation coefficient (rxy) was 0.522, which when compared to
r table (rt) with the degree of freedom (df) 28 valued 0.361, indicated that the
count value was higher than the table value. The significance value was 0.03
which is less than 0.05, meaning that the correlation was statistically significant. It
means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis
(H0) was rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that there was a significant
positive correlation between students’ self-esteem and their speaking ability. The
level of correlation was categorized as moderate. This finding implies that when a
students has good self-esteem, the students has good speaking ability as well. Vice
versa, if a student has low self-esteem, it is possible that the student has a poor
level of speaking ability.
B. Suggestion
Based on the above conclusions, the researcher suggests the following:
1. For Teacher
Teachers must know that students' speaking ability can be influenced
by various factors, one of which is self-esteem. Therefore, teachers can
provide encouragement to students to build positive self-esteem.
2. For Students
Students should realise that self-esteem has a role in their speaking
ability. Students are encouraged to develop a positive self-esteem and practice
speaking English regularly.
3. For Further Researcher
The results of this research can be useful as a reference for further
researchers that want to conduct further research on the relationship between
students’ self-esteem and their speaking ability. The researcher also suggests that
future researchers can add a larger sample size and come from various
backgrounds or different educational institutions to increase the generalisation of
the research results.
