The Use of Lumio Website To Improve Students Speaking at SMP Negeri 2 Watampone

Speaking a new language can be tough, and many students feel shy or afraid of
making mistakes when they have to speak English. This study looked at whether
an interactive website called Lumio could help a class of 20 seventh-graders at
SMP Negeri 2 Watampone become better speakers. The students' skills were
tested before and after six learning sessions on the website. The results were
impressive—the class average score shot up from 60.25 to 75.80. Ultimately, the
research showed that Lumio works because it creates a more engaging and
motivating digital space where students feel comfortable practicing, which in
turn builds their confidence and improves their overall speaking ability.
A. Conclusion
This research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of using the
LUMIO Website as a digital learning tool to improve students’ speaking
skills at SMP Negeri 2 Watampone. Based on the findings and data
analysis in the previous chapter, it can be concluded that the integration of
LUMIO into English language instruction has brought significant
improvements in students' speaking performance.
The study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and
post-test, administered to a sample of 20 students from class 7B. The
descriptive statistics showed a notable increase in the students’ speaking
scores after the implementation of LUMIO, with the average score rising
from 60.25 in the pre-test to 75.80 in the post-test. The results of the paired
sample t-test indicated that this improvement was statistically significant,
as shown by a p-value of 0.000 which is well below the threshold of 0.05.
These findings affirm the effectiveness of the LUMIO Website in
enhancing students' speaking abilities. The interactive features of LUMIO
such as visual aids, audio instructions, collaborative workspaces, and
formative assessments contributed to a more engaging and motivating
learning environment. By using LUMIO, students were encouraged to
participate more actively in classroom activities, express their ideas
verbally, and practice their pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, grammar,
and accuracy more confidently.
Moreover, this study provides additional evidence that technology-
supported learning, when integrated properly, can be a powerful
pedagogical tool. It supports the theory of student-centered learning, where
learners become active participants in their learning process and are given
the opportunity to develop skills through practical, real-life language use.
In conclusion, the use of LUMIO Website proved to be an effective
instructional medium in improving the speaking skills of junior high
school students. It not only supports the language development process but
also enhances students’ engagement, motivation, and confidence in using
English in both academic and everyday contexts.
B. Suggestion
Based on the findings and conclusions of this research, several
suggestions can be offered for different stakeholders including teachers,
students, institutions, and future researchers:
1. For English Teachers
Teachers are encouraged to integrate interactive and technology-
based media such as the LUMIO Website into their teaching practices,
especially when teaching productive skills like speaking. LUMIO
allows for diverse, engaging, and student-centered learning experiences
which can address common challenges faced in speaking classes such
as students' shyness, low participation, and limited vocabulary.
Teachers should also receive proper training and support in order to
maximize the features of LUMIO and apply it effectively within the
classroom.
2. For Students
Students should take advantage of interactive platforms like
LUMIO to practice speaking in an enjoyable and stress-free
environment. They should be more active and willing to participate in
classroom activities, make use of the features provided, and not be
afraid of making mistakes. Learning to speak a foreign language is a
process that requires consistent effort and practice, and tools like
LUMIO offer opportunities for students to improve outside the
conventional classroom setting.
3. For Schools and Educational Institutions
Schools should consider investing in educational technologies
and digital tools that can support innovative teaching and learning.
Providing adequate infrastructure such as internet access, digital
devices, and teacher training is essential in ensuring the success of
technology-enhanced learning. Institutions are also advised to include
digital literacy and blended learning strategies as part of their
curriculum development to prepare students for future learning trends.
4. For Future Researchers
This research focused only on one class and used a limited
sample size. Future researchers are recommended to conduct similar
studies with larger populations and longer observation periods to
examine the long-term effects of using LUMIO or other digital
platforms. Additionally, future research can explore comparative
studies between different digital tools or focus on other language skills
such as listening, reading, or writing.

such as interviews or observations to gain deeper insights into students’
perceptions and experiences during the learning process. In summary,
while this research has shown that LUMIO is an effective tool in
improving speaking skills, its implementation should be accompanied
by proper guidance, planning, and support to maximize its potential.
Education in the 21st century must embrace digital transformation to
create more engaging, personalized, and effective learning experiences.
