The Effect of Digitalization on English Learning at Junior High School

This research aims to describe the effect of digitalization in English language
learning at SMP Negeri 3 Watampone and SMP Negeri 7 Watampone. The
research method used is descriptive qualitative with technology-based learning
approach. Data were obtained through structured interviews and checklist
observations of teachers and students in grade VIII. The results showed that
various digital devices and applications, such as multimedia projectors,
computers/laptops, smartphones, Google, Google Translate, Google Forms,
YouTube, TikTok, Wordwall, Quizizz, Canva, and WhatsApp were actively
utilized in learning. Teachers use the media to deliver materials, increase
interaction, and conduct assessments, while students experience easy access to
materials and increased motivation to learn. On the other hand, obstacles found
include limited infrastructure, especially internet access and adequate devices, as
well as potential misuse of technology by students for activities that are not
related to learning. In general, digitalization has a positive impact on the
effectiveness and quality of English learning at the junior high school level. This
research concludes that digitalization has great potential to support learning
innovation, although its success is greatly influenced by the readiness of facilities,
teachers' digital competence, and students' discipline in using technology
appropriately. The results of the research are expected to be an input for teachers,
schools, and policy makers in optimizing the use of digital technology in the
educational environment.
A. Conclusion
Based on the research finding and discussion, the researcher concluded
that:
1. Digitalization tools used in English learning in junior high schools can be
categorized based on five technology levels as follows: multimedia
projector, speaker, Wordwall, Google Forms, and Quizizz are categorized
as learning management system (LMS); Personal computer (PC) and
smartphone are included in the physical level; Google, TikTok, and
Youtube as resource level; Google Translate and Canva are included in
the component technology level; Whatsapp and TikTok are included in
the application level.
2. The positive effects of using digitalization in English language learning
include ease of accessing learning resources, ease of assessing students,
increasing students' engagement and enthusiasm in learning, ease of
understanding English materials and vocabulary, and improving students'
English grades and skills. However, on the other hand, there are
challenges or negative effects of using digitalization in English language
learning,
such
as
technical
problems
when
using
digital
media/applications, difficulties at the beginning of learning, and
distractions in learning. Nevertheless, the results show that the positive
impact of using digitalization in the English learning process is more
dominant than the negative impact, thus confirming the importance of
technology integration in education.
B. Suggestion
Based on the discussion and conclusions that have been described, the
suggestions that the researcher can provide include:
1. For English Teacher
This research is expected to be a source of information for teachers
regarding the use of digitalization in English language learning in junior
high school, so that it can help in the learning and teaching process in the
digital era like now. Teachers are also expected to continue integrating
technology in the learning process by utilizing various applications and
digital media that have been proven to increase student engagement. In
addition, teachers need to increase supervision and provide stricter
guidance during the use of digital media.
2. For Student
Students are expected to use digital devices wisely and responsibly.
Students should realize the importance of focusing on the learning
material and avoid activities that can disrupt the learning process, such as
playing games or opening social media during lessons.
3. For further Researcher
This research is expected to be a source of information and reference
related to the use of digitalization in English language learning in junior
high school. This research is expected to help in formulating better
teaching strategies that are more in line with the needs of students in the
digital era.
