The Use of Canva Application to Boost Students' Interest in Learning English Reading Comprehension at Junior High School

This research explores the effectiveness of Canva as a teaching tool to enhance
students' interest, engagement, and reading comprehension in English at the junior
high school level. The research employed a quantitative descriptive method, utilizing
surveys and rubric-based assessments as research instruments. A sample of 32
students participated in this research, with data analyzed using SPSS to evaluate
improvements in engagement and comprehension. The findings reveal that 84% of
students found Canva-based activities more engaging. Rubric-based assessments
showed a 20% improvement in understanding main ideas and vocabulary, along with
a 28% increase in engagement levels from pre-test to post-test. Statistical analysis
confirmed these results as significant, supporting the hypothesis that Canva enhances
both student interest and reading comprehension. These results suggest that Canva's
visual and interactive features provide an effective medium for fostering student
motivation, active participation, and better comprehension in English reading
activities. The research concludes that Canva can be a valuable tool for enriching the
teaching and learning process, making reading comprehension more enjoyable and
effective for junior high school students. Future research is recommended to explore
Canva's application in other language skills and diverse educational settings.
A. Conclusion
The findings from the research suggest that using Canva as a teaching tool
has a significant positive effect on student interest, engagement, and reading
comprehension. Descriptive statistics and hypothesis testing confirm that
students not only preferred using Canva but also showed notable improvements
in comprehension and participation levels. Results from the survey indicated high
interest in Canva-based reading activities, with 84% engagement among the 32
students sampled. Rubric-based assessments demonstrated a 20% improvement
in comprehension and vocabulary and a 28% rise in engagement levels.
Statistical analysis further supports that these improvements were significant,
verifying the hypothesis that the use of Canva application boost students interest
in learning reading comprehension . These results indicate that
Canva can be a highly effective tool for supporting and enriching English reading
comprehension activities in junior high schools.
B. Suggestion
The researcher would like to give suggestion to:
1. English Teachers
Teachers are encouraged to incorporate Canva or similar digital tools in
their lesson plans to create more engaging and visually appealing learning
environments. Canva’s multimedia features can help tailor lessons to various
learning styles, fostering better comprehension and motivation. Additionally,
teachers should consider using Canva to support collaborative learning by
assigning group projects where students can create visual content together, further
enhancing teamwork and communication skills.
2. Students
Students should actively use Canva or similar tools to explore and
enhance their reading skills. By engaging with reading materials in a visually
interactive format, students can improve their comprehension while developing
valuable digital literacy skills. Exploring Canva’s features can also encourage
students to think creatively and take an active role in their own learning, making
the reading process more enjoyable and effective.
3. Further Researchers
The researcher hoped that future researchers would pay more attention
when analyzing and evaluating instruments carefully, moreover, researchers must
be careful in considering and choosing instruments that are suitable for their
research. Researchers also hope that this research can contribute and become a
reference in future research.
