The Effectiveness of Task Based Learning in Improving Students English Speaking Ability at Indonesian Senior High School Context
Baharuddin/882032020063 - Personal Name
This research aims to analyse the effectiveness of Task-Based Learning
(TBL) in improving students' English speaking ability in an Indonesian high
school context. Speaking is one of the most challenging skills for Indonesian
students, as it requires fluency, accuracy and appropriate use of language in
various communication situations. Task-Based Learning is an approach that
focuses on completing meaningful tasks to improve language skills in a
contextualised manner. This research used the Classroom Action Research (CAR)
method with a mixed approach, namely qualitative and quantitative. Data were
collected through observation and speaking tests conducted before and after the
application of TBL in two cycles. The results showed that there was a significant
improvement in the aspects of pronunciation, vocabulary, fluency, and accuracy
of students' speaking. The students' average score increased from 53.9 in the pre-
test to 63.9 in the first cycle, and reached 85.9 in the second cycle. The findings
prove that the application of Task-Based Learning can effectively improve
students' speaking ability by providing a more authentic and interactive
communication experience. Therefore, this method is recommended for English
teachers to improve students' speaking skills through interesting and meaningful
task-based activities.
Conclusion
Based on the discussion proposed in the previous chapter, the
improvement of students' speaking skills based on the findings of the pre-test
was 53.9. in cycle I it was 63.9 and cycle 2 was 85.9. The percentage of
students‘ improvement from pre-test to cycle I is 18.6% and from cycle 1 to
cycle 2 is 34.5 So, it can be concluded that the use of task-based learning
method in the teaching-learning process improves students’ speaking skills in
terms of pronunciation, vocabulary, fluency, and accuracy in senior high
school.
Suggestion
Based on the conclusions of this class action research, there are
several suggestions that can be conveyed, namely:
1. For English Teachers
It is recommended to use the task-based learning method in
improving students' speaking skills, especially in the aspects of
pronunciation, vocabulary, fluency, and accuracy. This method is highly
recommended to be applied in English speaking learning in the
classroom to help students improve their speaking skills. In addition,
teachers are expected to be more creative in teaching English, specially
in the aspect of speaking, because mastering this language requires
various effective approaches or methods.
2. For Students
Students need to actively participate in language learning through
the application of task-based learning method. Students are advised to
engage in various activity-based tasks designed to practice speaking
skills, such as group discussions, role plays, or presentations. With
frequent practice through these activities, fluency and confidence in
speaking can improve. In addition, students should also utilise such tasks
to expand their vocabulary, learn new words and phrases and use them in
real contexts. Recording and evaluating their speaking during the tasks
can help students recognise and correct pronunciation and other aspects
that still need improvement.
3. For Future Researchers
Future researchers are expected to investigate innovative
techniques to improve speaking skills. Thus, students can utilise a variety
of speaking contexts to develop their abilities, either by using this
technique or other techniques. This technique is also useful for
identifying the extent to which students' speaking skills improve in
various discussion situations. The results of this research can be used as
additional references or guidelines for further research on different topics
