An Analysis of code switching used by a teacher and students in teaching and learning process of speaking in the classroom

The purpose of this study is to determine the use of code switching by teacher
and students in the classroom teaching and learning process at vocational high
school in South Sulawesi. This research employed a using discourse analysis
to explore how code switching is applied during teaching activities. This
study selected one English teacher and six students as respondents in the used
of code switching. The researcher used recording devices in the field and
semi-structured interviews to collect data. The results show that there are
three types of code switching used by teachers and students in the teaching
and learning process, namely inter sentential switching, intra sentential
switching, and tag switching. Intra-sentential switching is the most dominant
type used by teachers and students of office management and business
services in the teaching and learning process, namely as many as 235
utterances included in inter-sentential switching, utterances included in intra-
sentential switching and utterances included in tag switching. While students'
perceptions when teachers use code switching in the teaching and learning
process because students feel more comfortable if the teacher uses 2
languages and are not confused when the teacher explains using the language
they understand
A. Conclusions
Based on observations and interviews, the results of this study show that
there are three types of code switching used by English teachers in the teaching
and learning process. They are Inter-sentential code switching, Intra-sentential and
Tag switching. Based on the interview results, the researcher found students'
perceptions when the teacher used code switching in the teaching and learning
process, namely students feel more comfortable and not confused when the
teacher explains using the language they understand.
B. Suggestion
Based on the conclusions, the researcher offer some suggestion that can be a
good distribution in order to increase the quality of English teaching learning
process and to improve the students‟ ability in mastering English. They are :
a. For the english teachers
study code switching in depth to find out how code switching is used and what
are the differences of each type. So that teachers know what types of code
switching are often used in classroom interactions, especially in the teaching
and learning process.
b. For the students
This study was useful students know that learning english is important and use
of code switching can help the students easier understanding the material.
c. For the readers
This study was useful to give knowledge in general about code switching.
