Improving Students Reading Skills through Power Point as Media in Teaching Reading at the Second Year of SMP Negeri 4 Watampone

This research was conducted about “Improving Students Reading Skill Through
Power Point as Media in Teaching Reading at SMP Negeri 4 Watampone”. The
objective of this research was to find out whether power point media improved
students’ reading skill in narrative text or not. In conducting this research, the writer
used pre-experimental design. The sample of this research was selected by using use
cluster sampling. The population of this research was 139 students of eight grade of
SMP Negeri 4 Watampone. The sample of this research was 16 students of eight grade.
The students were given treatments by using power point media. Data of the students’
test was analyzed by using SPSS 25 application. The result of this research showed that
mean of the students’ post-test score was 78.28 higher than pre-test was 75.70 with the
sig. (2-taile) is 0,0001 < 0,05. The writer inferred that the students’ reading skill has
significance improvement by using power point media.
A. Conclusions
Based on the data analysis and discussion in the previous chapter, the researcher
infers the result of this research show that studying narrative text through by using
Power point media can improved the student’s reading skill. It can be seen of the
students of the eight grade at SMP 4 Watampone has improvement in reading skill after
applying Power point media, especially in narrative text. The researcher proves the data
that the most of students get fair score classification with mean score of students’ pre-
test is75,70. The students reading skill after applying power point media significantly
improve, it is showed by the data that most of students get good score classification
with mean score of students post-test is 78,28. It was also prove by the significance test
(2-tailed) is 0,0001 < 0,05. It indicates that H 1 is accepted and H 0 is rejected.
B. Suggestions
In view of the fact that teaching using power point have been proved to improve
the students’ reading skill especially in narrative text. The students also feel more
interest when they are learning using media. The reseacher would like to give
suggestions as follows:
1. The teacher should be creative to manage the material and the classroom for
teaching reading such as using power point. Also the education system needs
them to improve the teaching skill according to the up to date technology. Now
days, the internet is widely used by lots of people. There are many websites that
can be accessed to get new technique in teaching. The equipment also should be
sophisticated and functioned perfectly to the students in class.
2. The teacher could use power point media as references technique in teaching
reading. Therefore, the students were always stimulate the students’ interest and
motivate them in learning reading. The teacher should be creative in applying
new technique or methods for students to improve their reading skill. The
students SMP Negeri 4 Watampone have to improve their ability in English.
3. The other researcher is suggested that other researcher may use the research
results as information or a reference to conduct the research with the similar topic
in the same design to improve the students’ reading skill with different subject.
