The Problems and Causes of Vocational High School Students In Reading Narrative Text

This thesis discusses of the problems and causes of students in reading
narrative texts in vocational high schools for the 2023/2024 academic year. The
formulation of this research is what are the problems faced by students at SMK
Negeri 4 Bone in reading narrative text and what are the main causes. This
research uses mixed methods, the subject of this research is class XI students of
TBSM (Teknik Bisnis Sepeda Motor) Department of SMK Negeri 4 Bone. The
instruments that researcher uses in this research are tests, surveys, and interviews.
The results of this research are intended to describe the problems and causes of
students in reading narrative text. Based on the results of the research, there are
several problems faced by students in reading narrative texts, namely difficulties
in determining linguistic characteristics (70.4%), determining the tense used
(70.4%), limited vocabulary (70.3%), text structure (66.7%) and lack of previous
experience for narrative texts (59.2%). The factors that cause these students to
face problems in reading narrative text are due to their lack of vocabulary mastery
and lack of interest in reading texts, especially English texts.
A. Conclusion
Based on the results of research conducted by researcher regarding the
problems faced by students in reading narrative text at SMK Negeri 4 Bone. Many
students experience problems in reading and this affects the quality of education,
the researcher can draw conclusions that:
The problems that have the highest percentage faced by students are
difficulties in determining the linguistic features (70.4%), determining the tense
used (70.4%), limited vocabulary (70.3%), text structure (66.7%) and not having
enough previous experience for narrative texts (59.2%). Therefore, most students
have difficulty in reading. This is in line with the results of the tests that have
been conducted, it can be seen that there is no significant comparison where out of
27 students majoring in TBSM only 14 students got the kkm score and 13 other
students scored below the kkm. The number of students who got the average
student test score only reached 51,9% for the narrative reading test.
The factors that cause these students to experience difficulties in reading
narrative texts are due to lack of vocabulary mastery and because students do not
often read English texts, students have difficulty in reading English texts well,
especially narrative texts. The researcher also found that students' lack of interest
in reading English texts affects their ability to understand the text especially at
SMK 4 Bone, students' interest in learning English is still relatively low, this is
because students' motivation is highest in productive subjects.
B. Suggestion
Based on the conclusions described above, there are several things
proposed by the researcher, among others:
1. For English teachers:
a. Teachers should provide various exercises to students in reading a text,
so that students will be more proficient in reading texts.
b. Teachers should seek more information about strategies or methods that
can be used to teach text reading. This can make students interested in
reading texts and can overcome the problems faced by students in
reading texts.
c. Teachers should find out students' problems in understanding English
reading especially narrative text and provide motivation in learning
English.
2. For students:
a. Students should enrich vocabulary and memorize vocabulary to
increase students' knowledge.
b. Students are expected to diligently practice and read English books.
3. For other researchers:
a. The researcher recommends that future researchers can examine
students' problems in reading English reading texts, especially narrative
texts by using more in-depth analysis, different research designs, diverse
participants, and more valid instruments.
b. The researcher suggests other researchers to explore more deeply
about students' problems in reading and how to overcome them.
