Improving Students Vocabulary Mastery In Reading By Using Extensive Reading In Eighth Grade Of Smpn 9 Watampone

This thesis presents research about “Improving Students’ Vocabulary Mastery in
Reading by Using Extensive Reading at SMPN 9”. This reserach was used to find
out whether or not the extensive reading can improve students’ vocabulary mastery.
This research used quantitative method. The researcher used rendom sampling. The
sample consisted of 15 students from the eight class of SMPN 9 Watampone. The
researcher gave pre test, treatments, and post test by using extensive reading. The
data on the students’ vocabulary mastery were analyzed by using SPSS 16.
This result of this research shows that the students had good ability in vocabulary. It
could be seen from the comparison data between the mean score of post test was
higher than pre test 43.0 > 60.7. The data was analized by using the significant was
0.00 < 0.005. It indicated that the alternative hypothesis (H 1 ) was accepted and of
course the null hypothesis (H 0 ) was rejected. There was significant difference
between of students’ vocabulary mastery before and after giving the treatment of
extensive reading and classifying into good category.
A. Conclusion
Based on the research finding and discussion, the researcher can concluded
that extensive reading approach is effective to improve students’ vocabulary mastery
in SMPN 9 Watampone. It can be seen from the results before extensive reading
approach was applied students’ score in pre test,and their score is increasing after
getting treatment.
Using extensive reading was proven to be more effective to improving
students’ vocabulary mastery of the Eighth Grade ofSMPN 9 Watampone. It can be
seen from the comparison data between the mean score of post testwas higher than
pre test. The main score of students in pre test was 43.0. After giving treatment by
using extensive reading as a learning, then the students got 60.73. in post test, it could
be concluded that post test was higher than pre test. The data was analyzed by using
the significant was 0,000
