This research investigates the impact of the peer-mentoring discussion
method on improving high school students' ability to write descriptive texts.
Population of this research is the elevent-grade students’ of Indonesian senior
high school in the academic year of 2023/2024, used classter random sampling
technique, the selected class was XI MIPA 3 with total number of 28 students.
The research implemented a pre-experimental design, including a pre-test, seven
structured peer-mentoring sessions, and a post-test. The findings reveal a
significant improvement in students’ writing abilities, To test the normality of the
data, the researcher used IBM SPSS Statistic 22 with the average score increasing
from 61.61 in the pre-test to 78.04 in the post-test. In this research it was found
that sig. (2-tailed) is 0.000 which is ˂0.05. Calculation method, including
normality and paired-sample tests, confirmed the method's effectiveness in
enhancing descriptive writing skills. Despite challenges such as initial low
engagement, the peer-mentoring approach proved valuable for fostering
collaborative learning and enhancing students' confidence in writing. This
research contributes to the field of language education by highlighting peer
mentoring as a beneficial strategy for improving writing skills, and it provides
insights for educators to optimize collaborative learning techniques.
A. Conclusion
This research examined the effectiveness of the peer mentoring
discussion method in improving high school students' descriptive text writing
ability. Using a pre-experimental method with pre-test and post-test on 28 high
school students during September-October 2024. Results showed significant
improvement between pre-test students’ score (61.61) and post-test students’
score was (78.04).
Statistical analysis showed normally distributed data and paired sample
tests confirmed a significant effect of the peer mentoring method on students'
descriptive text writing ability. Despite challenges such as lack of student
response at early meetings, this method proved effective in improving descriptive
text writing skills, aligned with previous research by Najogi & Adnan (2019).
B. Suggestion
Based on the research on peer mentoring discussions in improving high
school students' descriptive writing skills, here are some key recommendations:
1. Broader Application: Apply this method to other writing types, like
narrative or expository texts, and across different educational levels.
2. Peer Mentor Training: Provide training for peer mentors on text structure
and mentoring skills to improve discussion quality.
3. Extended Sessions: Increase the number or duration of sessions to allow
students more time to understand and practice.
4. Inclusive Approaches: Use visual aids or sample texts to support students
struggling with descriptive writing.
5. Reflection Skills: Encourage students to reflect on and critique their own
and peers’ writing after discussions.
6. Technology Integration: Utilize collaborative tools, such as Google Docs,
to enhance engagement, especially in remote learning.
7. Further Research: Conduct studies with larger samples and include
variables like motivation to assess the method's broader impact.
These suggestions aim to strengthen peer mentoring discussions and provide
valuable insights for educators and researcher.
