Using Self-Directed Learning Method to Promote Students’ Reading Skill at Senior High School Context

This research aims to promote students’ reading skill using Self-Directed
Learning Method. This research used a quantitative method used a pre-
experimental design in the form of a one-group pre-test and post-test. The
average post-test after treatement is 85.347. The population of this research was
class 10 students of Indonesian Senior High School for the 2023/2024 academic
year, which consisted of 280 students. The sample of the research consisted of 1
class is Class phase E3 .The result of this research indicates that self-directed
learninng method can be applied as a learning method to promote reading skill.
It is proven by the mean score of post-tests was significantly higher than pre-test
(50,28 > 75.00). It also can be seen from the result of t-test showed 0,000 which
is less than significant degree (0,05). This shows that H1 is accepted and H0 is
rejected. Therefore, the researcher stated that self-directed method can Promote
reading skill at Senior High School.
A. Conclusion
Based on the data analysis in the previous chapter, it was concluded
that related to the problem of the lack of student interest in Reading Skill
literacy in Fase E grade students' of sonior high school. In this research, the
researcher stated reading aloud method could be used as an self directed to
promote students' reading skill. This research was implemented at the Fase E
grade of SMAN 03 Bombana, especially for class Fase E3. The research was
carried out for four meetings, namely pre-test, treatments, and post-test.
Obtaining the mean score and standard deviation of students, it could be
concluded that the mean score of post-test was higher than pre-test (50.28 >
75.00) in reading comprehension and mean score and standard deviation of
reading skill test students, it could be concluded that the mean score of post-
test is higher than pre-test (73.264 > 85.347) Therefore, Using Self-Directed
Learning Method Were Effective In to Promote Student’s Reading Skill At
Senior High School.
Furthermore, the calculated significance value is 0,000 which is
smaller than 0.05). t count 19.000 and t table 2.030, so t account 19.000> t
table 2.030 so based on the basis of decision making through comparison with
t count and t table it can be concluded that H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected.
Therefore, the results from this research improved significantly. It could be
understood that self directed was able to be applied as learning to promote
students reading skill.
B. Suggestion
After explaining the conclusions above, the researcher will then
describe the suggestions, the suggestions that the researcher intends are as
follows:
1. Teachers can use the self-directed learning method to promote student reading
skill.
2. Students are required to be more diligent and active in learning so that the
learning outcomes obtained can be achieved.
