An Analysis of Factor That Influence Students' Engagement and Persistence in Learning English

This thesis discusses the factors that influence students' engagement and persistence
in learning English. This research aims to have two objectives in this thesis, namely:
to understand the factors that influence students' engagement in learning English and
to understand the factors that influence students’ persistence in learning English. By
understanding the factors that influence students' persistence and engagement,
teachers can design more interesting and relevant learning experiences. To clarify the
above problems, the researcher uses qualitative methods which data collection used
observation, interview and questionnaire techniques. The data analysis techniques
used are data reduction, data presentation and data verification. The results showed
that 1) Students in class X TKJ 3 at SMKN 1 Bone can be seen to be involved in
learning English because of their intrinsic motivation. There are internal factors and
external factors that influence students' involvement in learning English. The internal
factors include interest, confidence, and motivation to learn, while the external factors
that influence student engagement are the learning environment and interactive
learning methods. 2) The factors of perseverance of students in class X TKJ 3 at
SMKN 1 Bone are intrinsic motivation, learning environment support and varied
teaching methods. There are internal factors and external factors that influence
students' perseverance in learning English. Internal factors include interest,
psychological and physical health, while external factors that influence student
engagement are the learning environment and friends.
A. Conclusion
Based on the results of the research described in the previous chapter
conducted by researcher in class X TKJ 3 at SMKN 1 Bone, the researcher
concluded as follows:
1. Students in class X TKJ 3 at SMKN 1 Bone can be seen to be involved in
learning English because of their intrinsic motivation. There are internal
factors and external factors that influence students' involvement in
learning English. The internal factors include interest, confidence, and
motivation to learn, while the external factors that influence student
engagement are the learning environment and interactive learning
methods. Students who have a strong interest and desire to learn English
tend to be more active and involved in learning activities and teacher
factors also affect student involvement in learning English.
2. The factors of perseverance of students in class X TKJ 3 at SMKN 1 Bone
are intrinsic motivation, learning environment support and varied teaching
methods. There are internal factors and external factors that influence
students' perseverance in learning English. Internal factors include
interest, psychological and physical health, while external factors that
influence student engagement are the learning environment and friends.
The combination of these factors can help students to stay energized and
keep trying in their learning proces
B. Suggestion
As the end of writing this thesis, based on the research that the
researcher conducted, the researcher would like to provide suggestions that
might be input material, including the following:
1. Teachers should always motivate students to be more active in learning
English.
2. For students of class X TKJ 3 at SMKN 1 Bone and students in general, to
increase their time learning English outside of school hours, always be
ready before the lesson starts, foster curiosity about English lessons, be
active during the discussion process, and increase students concentration
in dealing with interruptions during the learning process.
