The Effectiveness of The Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) in Improving Students’ reading Comprehension of Descriptive Text

This research aims to determine the effectiveness of The Student Teams
Achievement Divisions (STAD) in improving students’ reading comprehension of
descriptive text. This method of research is quantitative research used a pedagogical
approach with a quasi-experimental design. The sample of this research was class X
with a total of 60 students, which was selected using cluster sampling technique.
Class X.1 as an experimental group with 30 students and class X.6 as a control group
with 30 students. The data collection technique was carried out by giving 20 multiple
choice questions about descriptive text. Researcher gave pre-test, treatment, and post-
test for the experimental group and pre-test and post-test for the control class. The
research results show that after learning using STAD method it can improve students’
reading comprehension. From the post test results, the average value obtained by the
experimental class was 71.33, much higher than the average value of the control class
post test which was 63.33. This shows that the use of STAD improves students'
reading comprehension. This can also be seen from the t-test results which show
