The Use of The Busuu Application in Improving Students Speaking Skills of Junior High School

This researcher aims to determine the effectiveness of using the Busuu application
in improving the speaking skills of junior high school students. This research used
quantitative method with quasi experimental design in the form of pre-test and
post-test design. The population in this research consisted of class VIII A as the
experimental class and class VIII B as the control class at SMP Negeri 3
Awangpone with each class totaling 30 students. The mean score of experimental
class studentsin the pre-test (34,07) and post-test (72,83) after treatment Busuu
Application. And the standard deviation of students’ pre-test (7,719) and post-test
(5,796). While the mean score of control class students in the pre-test (27,98) and
post-test (28,67), the standard deviation of students’ pre-test (4,279) and post-test
(5,175). This shows that the mean score and standard deviation in the pre-test and
post-test of experimental class students are higher than the mean score and
standard deviation in the pre-test and post-test of control class students which are
lower. Thus can be concluded that the use of the Busuu application in the class
was more effective in improving students’ English speaking skills.
A. Conclussion
Based on the findings discussed in the previous chapter, the
conclusion of the research is as using the Busuu application is effective
in improving students’ English speaking skills, and students can more
easily understand in the Busuu application, which can enhance their
speaking skills. In addition, students became interested in learning
English and had a very positive impact on the improvement of speaking
skills among students at SMP Negeri 3 Awangpone from june 24, 2024
to july 24, 2024. This research was conducted over six meetings in in
the experimental class, which included a pre-test, treatment, and post-
test, and in the control class, which included a pre-test and post-test
without any treatment.
The results of this report can demonstrate the relationship
between the pre-test and post-test scores of students in the experimental
class, where the average pre-test score (34,07) is greater than the
average post-test score (72,83). Meanwhile, in the control class, the
average pre-test score (27,97) is compared to the average post-test score
(28,67). It can be concluded that the use of the Busuu application is
more effective in improving students’ English speaking skills, as seen
from the average score of the pre-test and post-test in the experimental
class being higher than those in the control class. Based on the above
result where the value of t-test is greater than the value of t-table the
alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is
rejected this means that the hypothesis “The Use Of The Busuu
Application In Improving students’ speaking skills Of Junior High
School” is accepted.
B. Suggestion
Teachers who have only relied on curriculum based guidebooks
can easily use the Busuu application in teaching and learning process so
that English language learners do not get bored in class. The Busuu
application is a great resource for learning English as it offers various
approaches and features that can chance language proficiency,
particularly in the area of speaking skills. Students can take advantage
of the Busuu application to help them learning English, especially in
class VIIIA. This program makes learning English easier for students,
especially in honing their speaking skills. This research is expected to
offer a significant new perspective on how to assist children who have
difficulty speaking.
