Students’ Perceptions on Digital Materials Usage in Learning English at SMAN 9 Bone

This research aims to determine the students’ perceptions on digital materials
usage in learning English. Digital materials in this research are learning media
provided by teachers in the learning process in accordance with technological
developments in the digital era. In this research, the researcher uses qualitative
research with a descriptive qualitative approach through interviews and
observation conducted to obtain information data from the three participants of
grade XI 4 at SMAN 9 Bone. The results show that most of the students give
positive response from the use of digital materials, student activeness, student
convenience, student interest, and a role as a learning resource. As students who
grew up in the digital era, they have more enthusiasm and interest when talking
about technology such as digital materials. The use of digital materials in English
learning are very supportive in learning process. Digital learning, which has many
interesting references, provides an efficient learning experience. Students do not
need to bother looking for learning references, because the digital era provides
many features that help the learning process run more efficiently. Therefore, the
use of digital materials is recommended in the learning process. The benefits
obtained when using digital materials are very influential in improving students'
ability to learn foreign language. Teachers are also required to be more familiar
with technology, such as digital materials that can support the success of the
learning and teaching process.
A. Conclusion
Based on the results of discussion, it can be concluded that student
perceptions on the use of digital materials provide mostly give positive
response on digital materials usage in the teaching and learning process. In
the aspect of perception based on experience, students feel enjoyed,
interested, easy, and students are required to be. In perception based on
selective, students stated that their use reliable learning resources, digital
materials is necessity and accessible. In perception based on conjectural, it
was found that students were helped by the features, however students also
had difficulties such as facilities and infrastructure and many distractions.
In the perception based on evaluative, it is found that students felt
comfortable and aligns well with students’ learning style.
The results can be useful for teachers who want to use digital
materials as learning media. Some things that must be considered when
using digital materials are facilities and infrastructure such as the
preparation of digital tools and a reliable internet connection, as well as
supervision of students when using digital material, the amount of
distraction is also able to disrupt the focus of students. Teachers must be
active and assertive with students when using digital materials. Therefore,
the use of digital materials is recommended in the learning process. The
benefits obtained when using digital materials are very influential in
improving students' ability to learn foreign languages. Teachers are also
required to be more familiar with technology, such as digital materials that
can support the success of the learning and teaching proces
B. Suggestion
Based on the conclusion above, the researcher provides several
suggestion for teacher, students and further researcher.
1. For Teachers
a. In teaching and learning classes, digital material is good to use to
provide material to students continuously, especially for foreign
language learning because it has many benefits that can improve the
quality of students learning.
b. Teachers should familiarize themselves with using digital materials
that can have a positive impact on students and make digital materials
a permanent learning resource for students.
2. For Students
a. Students should use their abilities in the digital era to create a more
stable atmosphere and be able to assist teachers in the use and
operation of digital materials because this can provide a tremendous
improvement to the learning process.
b. Students as participants in the learning process must be more active
and more critical in terms of theory and active in asking questions
about things they don't know, both to the teacher concerned and their
friends.
c. Students are allowed to practice the material they have studied more
often outside of learning hours so that their language quality improves
and they are able to find where they made their own mistakes.
3. For Further Researchers
For future researchers who want to develop research in English
learning classrooms based on digital materials, they can use the results of
this research as a reference for further research on the use of digital
materials for various language skills.
Finally, the researcher admits that there are still many errors and
shortcomings in this thesis, therefore the researcher hopes for criticism and
suggestions to improve and improve this thesis. Researchers hope that this
research can be useful and help teachers, students and future researchers.
