The Correlation Between Students’ Self-Efficacy in Speaking English and Their Public Speaking Performance
Desy Safitri/882032020024 - Personal Name
The objectives of this research were to determine the types of students' self-
efficacy and public speaking performance and to determine the degree of
correlation between self-efficacy and public speaking performance in English
Education at IAIN Bone. The participants of this research were third semester
students of English Education of IAIN Bone in the academic year 2023/2024. The
sample was 15 students, selected using stratified randomization technique.
Quantitative method was used in this research and the research design was
correlational research. In addition, the instruments used were a self-efficacy
questionnaire to assess students' self-efficacy, speaking prompts, and rubrics to
assess students' public speaking performance. Pearson's product moment
correlation coefficient was used in this research by using the SPSS 23 program in
processing the data to determine the correlation. The results of this research show
that the calculation of r for the students' self-efficacy score and public speaking
performance is -0.661 which proves that the two variables have a negative
correlation. Based on the correlation interpretation, it can be said that the
interpretation between variables X (self-efficacy) and Y (public speaking
performance) is classified as a moderate negative correlation. The accepted
hypothesis in this research was the alternative hypothesis (H a ), while the null
hypothesis (H o ) was rejected. It can be concluded that, a heightened level of self-
efficacy tends to correlate with a decrease in public speaking performance, and
conversely, a decrease in self-efficacy tends to correlate with an improvement in
public speaking performance
A. Conclusion
Based on the results of the data, the researcher concluded that:
1. The type of correlation exists between students‘ self-efficacy and students'
English public speaking performance in the third semester students of
English Education at IAIN Bone in the academic year 2023/2024 have
negative correlation. In this type of correlation, two variables moved in
opposite directions. That can be defined as when one variable increases,
the other variable decreases, and vice versa.
2. The degree of correlation between self-efficacy and public speaking
performance in the third semester students of English Education at IAIN
Bone in the academic year 2023/2024 based on the correlation coefficient
(r count ) is lower than r table . This indicated that there is a significant negative
correlation between self-efficacy and public speaking performance of
third-semester students of the Department of English Study Program IAIN
Bone academic year 2023/2024. The interpretation of the correlation
coefficient -.661 was a moderate negative correlation. It can be concluded
that students who have a high level of self-efficacy tend to get low score
criteria and vice versa.
3. In conclusion, the accepted hypothesis in this research is the alternative
hypothesis (H a ), while the null hypothesis (H o ) is rejected. It can be
concluded that, a heightened level of self-efficacy tends to correlate with a
decrease in public speaking performance, and conversely, a decrease in
self-efficacy tends to correlate with an improvement in public speaking
performance.
B. Suggestion
The researcher would like to give suggestion to:
1. English Teachers
According to the researche, English teachers are suggested to pay more
attention to their students, especially in speaking, especially to students who
are still hesitant to do public speaking for fear of making mistakes in
pronunciation, grammar, and others. In addition, the researcher also hopes that
English teachers will pay more attention to students' potential in English.
2. Students
The researcher suggested the students to practice speaking more in
order to improve their speaking ability, get used to listening to English
speakers or from any learning media so that the students can continue to add
vocabulary or correct pronunciation, and also the researcher also suggested
them to say what they want to say when the teacher asks them to speak, not to
feel afraid or not confident in making mistakes because it is all part of a
process to get better public speaking performance.
3. Further Researchers
The researcher hoped that future researchers would pay more attention
when analyzing and evaluating instruments carefully, moreover, researchers
must be careful in considering and choosing instruments that are suitable for
their research. Researchers also hope that this research can contribute and
become a reference in future research.
