A Study on Problems Faced By Students In Reading Comprehension At Senior High School

This thesis discussed the study of the problems faced by students in reading
comprehension at senior high school for the 2022/2023 academic year. The
formulation of this research is what are the problems faced by students at SMA
Negeri 14 Bone in reading comprehension. This research used a mixed method, the
subjects of this research are XII grade students of SMA Negeri 14 Bone. The
instrument the researcher used in this research are test and interview. The results of
this study are intended to describe the problems faced by students in reading
comprehension. Based on the results of research that there are several problems faced
by students in reading comprehension, namely the students have problems identifying
the main idea (52.5%), students have problems in making inferences (62%), students
have problems identifying detailed information (55,75%), Therefore, the aspect of the
problem most faced by students in reading comprehension is vocabulary
understanding (67.5%). For the factors causing those students faced problems in
reading comprehension because they lacked vocabulary mastery and the students'
lack of interest in reading texts, especially in English texts.
A. Conclusion
Based on the results of research conducted by researcher regarding the problems
faced by students in reading comprehension at SMA Negeri 14 Bone. Many students
experience problems in reading comprehension and this affects the quality of
education, the researcher can draw conclusions that:
The problems faced by the students are difficulty in answering main idea
questions (53.5%), understanding vocabulary (67.5%), making inferences questions
(62%), and finding detailed information (55.75%). Therefore, the most difficult
aspect faced by twelve year students is reading for understanding vocabulary with
(67.5%). As a result, most of the students had difficulty achieving the standard grade
for reading comprehension test. This can be seen from the mean score of the students
(52.33%) for the reading comprehension test.
For the factors causing those students faced problems in reading comprehension
because they lacked vocabulary mastery. Therefore, the students do not recognize the
meaning of the word and the content of the text. The researcher also found that
students' lack of interest in reading texts, especially English texts, thus affected their
ability to understand the text.
B. Suggestion
Based on the conclusions described above, there are several things. proposed by
the researcher include:
1. For English teachers:
a. The teacher should give various practices to the students in reading a
text, so the students will be more adept in reading text.
b. The teacher should search more information about the strategies or
method how to teach reading text. It can make the students' interest in
reading the text and it will overcome the problem of the students face
in reading text.
c. The teacher must be aware of students' problems in understanding
English reading and provide motivation in learning English.
2. For students:
a. The student should enrich vocabulary, and memorize vocabularies to
improve the students' knowledge.
b. The students are expected to practice diligently and read English
books.
3. For other researchers:
a. The researcher recommends that future researchers investigate
students' difficulty in comprehending English reading text using a
deeper analysis, a different research design, a diverse set of
participants, and more valid instruments.
b. The researcher suggests other researchers to dig deeper about students'
difficulties in understanding the text and how to solve it.
