This research aims to find out the students’ motivation in vocabulary
learning through sing-along teaching technique based on four aspects of the ARCS
model and the extent of students’ motivation in vocabulary learning using the sing-
along teaching. The participants of this research were seventh grade in Junior High
School students. The method of this research is qualitative research with case study
design that used three instruments, namely interview, observation, and
questionnaire. Purposive sampling was used to select participants to collect data
through interview. Data analysis techniques were carried out in three stages,
namely data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusion. The results of this
research showed that students are well motivated in vocabulary learning through
sing-along teaching technique based on each aspects of the ARCS model of
motivation. The results also indicated that the students' motivation in vocabulary
learning through sing-along teaching technique is at the 'High-degree of motivation'
level. Therefore, based on the results of this research, the sing-along technique is
one of the best options as a teaching technique in developing students' motivation
in vocabulary learning.
A. Conclusions
Based on the results of the research that has been put forward in the previous
discussion, several conclusions can be drawn, as follows:
1. The students’ motivation in learning vocabulary using the sing-along
teaching technique based on the four aspects of ARCS model of motivation
Based on the results of interviews and observations, the researcher
concluded that sing-along teaching techniques in learning vocabulary
effectively had a positive impact on developing students' learning
motivation. The students’ learning motivation researcher reviewed from the
four aspects of the ARCS model of motivation.
For the attention aspect, students showed a lot of interest in this
learning, such as the variety of activities, learning media, etc., based on the
interview results. The observation results also showed that students' focus
was well-maintained during learning. For the relevance aspect, the results
of the interview showed that there was a relationship or similarity that
students found between this learning and their previous knowledge. The
observation results also showed that students seem to understand how these
learning outcomes will affect their learning lives in the future. For the
confidence aspect, students' self-confidence was well formed during the
learning process based on the interview results. The observation results also
showed that supported students seemed to have no difficulty adapting to the
application of this sing-along technique. For the satisfaction aspect, the
interview results showed that students enjoyed the whole learning process
and gave positive responses towards the teacher's attitude in class, especially
in giving rewards to them. The observation results also showed that students
showed a satisfied attitude with everything they had done during the
learning process. Students also felt happy to have completed this learning
well. Based on all the results of each aspect, the researcher concludes that
by using the sing-along teaching technique, students are well motivated to
learn vocabulary.
2. The extent of students’ motivation in vocabulary learning using the sing-
along teaching technique.
Based on the results of the questionnaire, students' motivation in
vocabulary learning through the sing-along teaching technique was rated
'High-Degree' with a mean score 4.4 out of 5. This result indicated that the
sing-along technique was worked so well in developing students’
motivation in vocabulary learning and became one of the best options to
apply as a technique in teaching English.
B. Suggestions
Based on the conclusion above, the researcher will give suggestions to all
readers and especially teachers and students:
1. For the teacher
Based on the researcher observations during the application of the sing-
along teaching technique in vocabulary learning, the researchers suggest
that teachers should pay more attention to the systematics and dynamics of
learning because students seem to enjoy learning in a systematic and non-
confusing sequence as well as learning that is dynamic and fun to follow.
2. For the students
Based on the results of this research, the researcher suggests the
students to use the sing-along technique to increase their vocabulary. As this
technique works well for their motivation, it seems to be very helpful in
improving their achievement in learning English, especially vocabulary.
3. For the other researchers
Based on the problems the researcher found when applying the sing-
along teaching technique in vocabulary learning, the researcher suggests for
the future researchers who want to do similar research to combine the sing-
along technique with pronunciation or listening learning. The researcher
also suggests combining the sing-along technique with the use of other
additional media, such as music videos or pictures, to attract students'
attention from a visual perspective.
