This thesis presents research on the analysis of speech events in the
process of learning English. The purpose of this study is (a) to find out how
speech events occur in the process of learning English. (b) To find out what kind
of directive speech acts are contained in speech events that occur. To solve the
problem, a descriptive qualitative research type with a phenomenological
approach was used. The data sources in this study were students of class XI MIPA
1 SMAN 3 Bone. The data collection techniques used were observation and
documentation. The data analysis used is data analysis according to Miles and
Huberman, which consists of three stages, namely data reduction, data display,
and conclusion drawing/verification. The results showed that, 1) the researcher
found that speech events occurred in class XI MIPA 1 SMA Negeri 3 Bone by
fulfilling the conditions of the occurrence of speech events, by Dell Hymes who
divides several components that cause the occurrence of speech events, namely:
setting and scene, characters, endings, order of action, key, intrumentalities,
norms, and genre. 2) There are types of directive speech acts that are often used
by teachers in the English learning learning process that takes place in class XI
MIPA 1 SMA Negeri 3 bone in the form of orders, suggestion, requests,
invititations, prohibitions, advice and criticism.
A. Conclusion
Based on the descriptions in the chapter of research results and
discussion, the authors can put forward conclusions from the results of the
research conducted as follows:
1. The researcher found that the speech event occurred in class XI MIPA 1
SMA Negeri 3 Bone by fulfilling the conditions for the occurrence of
speech events, including place and time, speakers and interlocutors, and
the purpose of the conversation. The place where the speech event
occurred was in class XI MIPA 2 on August 29, 2023, while the speaker is
the teacher and the interlocutor is the student of class XI MIPA 1. The
purpose of the conversation between the speaker and the interlocutor is to
give students an understanding of the materials presented by the teacher.
This is in line with the theory proposed by Dell Hymes which divides
several components that cause speech events, namely: setting and scene,
participant, ends, act sequences, keys, instrumentalities, norms, and
genres.
2. The researcher found that in the speech events that occurred in class XI
Mipa 1 there were types of directive speech acts that were often used by
teachers in the English language learning process that took place in class
XI MIPA 1 SMA Negeri 3 Bone in the form of orders, suggestions,
requests, invitations, prohibitions, advice and criticism. In this study, the
researcher also found that the command type speech act is a speech act that
is often spoken by the teacher.
B. Suggestions
Based on the results of the research and discussion that has been
presented in the previous chapter, it can be concluded that some suggestions
are expected to be useful for the community and to other researcher who are
interested in raising the same title. Suggestions that the author can give are as
follows:
1. The researcher hopes that teachers pay more attention to the speech used
during the learning process. The use of types, strategies, and factors
behind the use of directive speech acts are some of the things that
influence the learning interaction in class. Therefore, teachers are expected
to optimize the use of varied directive speech acts that are in accordance
with the learning context. Thus, the behavior embodied in the teacher's
speech can be assessed as an effort to build communicative
communication, as well as build a pleasant situation, so that learning
objectives can be achieved optimally.
2. Fot students, researcher hope that students can be more critical and good at
reading the meaning of each utterance spoken by teacher so that there is no
misunderstanding in interpreting an utterance so that the learning process
can run smoothly and communicatively.
3. The researcher hopes that this research can be useful for students who
conduct further research on the same topic. Researcher hope that this topic
and the discussion that has been presented can arouse curiosity to conduct
further research.
