The Effectiveness of Series Picture in Teaching Writing Descriptive Texts in Senior High School Context

This thesis presents research about the effectiveness of series picture in
teaching writing descriptive texts in Indonesian senior high school context. This
research aims to find out the effectiveness of series picture in teaching writing
descriptive text in Indonesian senior high school context. There are two variables
in this research. The dependent variable is the students’ ability to write descriptive
text. The independent variable is the series picture in teaching writing descriptive
text. This research applied quantitative method which used pre-experimental
design with one group pre-test and post-test. The researcher used cluster random
sampling. The researcher gave pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The instrument of
this research is writing test. The data on the students’ ability to write descriptive
text were analyzed by using SPSS 22. The result of this research showed that after
learning to write descriptive text using series picture, students haved good skill in
writing. It shows from the mean score of post-test was significantly higher than
pre-test (78.25>53.74). It also could be seen from the result of t-test showed 0.00
which was < significant degree (0.05). It can be defined that H0 (null hypothesis)
is rejected, and automatically H1 (alternative hypothesis) is accepted. Therefore, it
can be stated that using series picture in teaching writing descriptive text is
effective in enhancing students’ ability to write descriptive text.
A. Conclusion
In conclusion, the use of series pictures in teaching students to write
descriptive texts is effective to be applied in improving students' ability to write
descriptive texts. This can be proven by looking at the average pre-test and post-
test scores and standard deviations. The pretest average value is 53.74 and the
pretest standard deviation was 12.55. While the average value of the post test is
78.25 and the standard deviation of the post test is 7.98. Furthermore, the results
of the t test indicates 0.00 which is < degree of significance (0.05). This shows
that H1 is accepted and H0 rejected. This means that there is a significant
difference from students' ability to write descriptive texts on the pre-test and post-
test after being given treatment through the media series picture.
B. Suggestion
Based on the research results and conclusions, the researcher wants
to provide suggestions as follows:
1. For teachers
English teachers must be creative in managing materials that must be
integrated into the classroom. For example by using Series Picture as a
media.
2. For students
The students should learn more about English. Students must study
harder to improve their writing skills by using several media, for example
by using Series Picture as a media. Thus, students can easily improve all
their skills, especially in writing descriptive texts.
3. For the next researcher
Because this research gives quite good results, it is hoped that further
research will be carried out researchers can do this research better and give
better results.
