The Use of Smart TV in Teaching English for Indonesian Senior High School Students in Watampone (A Case Study Research)

This research aims to convey the benefits of using smart TV and reviewing the
role of smart TV in learning English. The smart TV in this research is the
technology provided by the minister of education in the framework of the smart
school program which is held specifically for the final level in high school as
learning solutions from the impact of Covid-19. However, now smart TVs can be
used better in learning classes with many benefits and the important role they play
in learning classes. The research type is a qualitative research with a case study
approach. The data were obtained with interviews to find information from the
participants who are the teachers of English language from the three different
senior high schools. Field observations as a reinforcement for the data obtained.
The results show that the benefits of using smart TV are resulting the positive
engagement, improve the students interest and motivation in the learning process.
Furthermore, the role of smart TV in the learning process as a learning resource,
smart TV provides many conveniences for the teachers in accessing various
teaching materials and displays videos related to learning. Smart TV increases the
stability of the English language teaching and learning process with various
facilities and features obtained from the smart TV itself and also stimulates
students to continue learning.
A. Conclusion
Based on the research finding and discussion, the researcher concluded
that:
1. The benefits of using smart TV can seem in three aspect. They are
students engagement, interest and motivation in English learning process.
The benefits obtained certainly have a big influence on improving
students' abilities in foreign languages. The improved in learning activity
obtained in terms of doing, feeling, and thinking which also increase
students interest in attention, providing the right goals and learning
intensity. Students motivate to make action in learning activity, relevant
to the material and more confidence. The results obtained based on
interviews regarding the overall benefits are positive, confirming that
these benefits do occur in learning classes, but it is very embarrassing
because the availability of smart TVs is not yet comprehensive. The
results of observations also showed positive results.
2. The role of Smart TVs in the teaching and learning process is as a
learning resource because it was stated that almost everyone carries out
activities in front of a screen (cellphone, TV, LCD , computer/ PC). In
conclusion, this research has revealed that smart TV technology is able to
play a good role as a new learning resource for students because the
features provided to support learning activities from a theoritical
perspective and can even provide improvements in language mastery with
correct pronounciation.
B. Suggestion
Based on the suggestion above, the researcher provides several suggestion
for teacher, students and further researcher.
1. For Teachers
a. In teaching and learning classes, technology such as smart TVs
should be used to provide material to students continuously, especially
for foreign language learning because it has many benefits that can
improve the quality of student learning.
b. Teachers must familiarize themselves with the use of smart TVs
which can have a positive impact on students and make smart TVs a
permanent learning source for students.
c. The teacher's ability to process material, create material and search for
material with videos and features available on smart TV via
technological media is managed as attractively as possible because the
smart TV screen display is guaranteed to be clear.
d. Apart from using smart TV as a learning medium as well as a learning
resource, teachers also provide opportunities for students to practice
directly to increase students' stimulation in speaking using a foreign
language and provide a little pressure to make students continue to be
active in terms of practice.
2. For Students
a. Students must use their abilities in the field of technology to create a
more stable atmosphere and be able to assist teachers in the use and
operation of smart TVs because this tool can provide extraordinary
improvements to the learning process.
b. Students as participants in the learning process must be more active
and more critical in terms of theory and active in asking questions
about things they don't know, both to the teacher concerned and their
friends.
c. Students are allowed to practice the material they have studied more
often outside of learning hours so that their language quality improves
and they are able to find where they made their own mistakes.
3. For Further Researchers
For researchers in the future who want to develop research in
English language learning classes based on technology in the form of
screens such as smart TVs, they can use these results as a reference for
further research regarding the use of smart TVs for various language
skills, and develop trials of the features available on smart TVs..
Finally, the researcher admits that there are still many errors and
shortcomings in this thesis, therefore the researcher hopes for criticism and
suggestions to improve and improve this thesis. Researchers hope that this
research can be useful and help teachers, students and future researcher.
