This research is aimed to know the effectiveness of KWL (Know, Want to know, and Learnt)-Strategy in improving students’ reading comprehension in descriptive text at the second grade students of SMAN 1 Ajangale.
This research employs pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The population of this research is the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Ajangale which consist about 214 students. The sample is taken by using cluster sampling technique. The researcher chooses the XI IPA I class which consists of 23 students as the sample of this research. In this research, the researcher uses quantitative method. The data are collected by pre-test and post-test.
The research findings indicate that the use of KWL-Strategy is effective to improve the students’ comprehension in reading descriptive text. It is proved by the result of this research, from the test. It shows : (1) the mean score obtained by the students through pre-test is 10.09 and post-test is 14.43 (2) the t-test value is higher than the t-table (12.51>2.074). It means that there is a significant difference between the result of the students’ pre-test and post-test. Therefore, null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. KWL-Strategy gives better result to improve the students’ reading comprehension in reading descriptive text. In other words, KWL-Strategy is effective to teach reading.
A. Conclusion
After calculating and analyzing the result of KWL-strategy research in the previous chapter, it can be concluded that:
KWL-Strategy helps the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Ajangale to improve their reading comprehension. Based on the data of mean score which have been explained in the chapter IV (Four), the mean score of post-test is higher (14.43) than the mean score of pre-test (10.09). It means that the value has positively increased.
B. Suggestion
Learning language generally and English specifically, there should have some strategies that the teacher can apply in classroom teaching. Especially for reading comprehension, most of the students can read well but it does not mean that they can catch the point of the text better. So, the teacher should understand the students need. Therefore, they can apply good strategy in their class. They could apply KWL-Strategy as one of the effective ways to help the students’ improve their reading comprehension.
