Jusma/882032019038 - Personal Name
This research aims to determine whether the skimming technique is
effective in improving students' reading skills or not. This study used a
quantitative approach with pre-experimental design. Researcher took 21
students in 6 meetings. The researcher used a writing test as a research
instrument and this test was carried out before and after (pre-test and post-
test) the use of skimming techniques in learning and pre-test and post-test
questions using narrative text. This study shows that the use of skimming
techniques has a significant effect on improving students' reading skills.
There are two variables in this research, namely the independent variable
and the dependent variable. After testing, the results of this research shows
that there is a significant difference between the students’ pre-test and
post-test. Where the average pre-test score is 45,24 an the average post-test
score is 21. The t-rest value is greather than the t-table value. The students’
t-test value is 6.959 and the students’ t-table value is 1.725. and also the
calculated significance value of 0,000 is less than 0,05. This means that
Ho is rejected and H1 is accepted.
A. Conclusion
Based on the findings and discussion in the previous
chapter, the researcher concluded that the skimming technique
effective in improves students’ reading skills, seen from the results
of the students’ pre-test and post-test. The students’ average pre-
test score 45,24 and the students’ post-test score 21. Furthermore,
it can be seen from the t-test score that it was higher than the t-
table score. The students’ t-test value is 6,959 and the students’ t-
table value is 1,725. And it can be said that the skimming
technique used by this researcher has a good effect on improving
students’ reading skills.
B. Suggestion
Based on the conclusions stated above, the researcher
would like to provide some suggestions for English teachers,
further researchers for anyone who reads this thesis as follows:
For Teacher :
a. Teacher should be creative to find and manage in teaching
reading.
b. Since the achievement of the students’ taught skimming
technique developed significantly, the researcher expects the
teacher of english to apply this method/strategy in teaching
reading subject.
For Students
a. The students should study more about grammar. It can
make them easier to making meaning from a sentence.
So the students should making meaning from one
sentence full not from word by word.
b. The students should focus when reading a text, so it
can make them easier to get the gist of the text.
c. The students should read the text carefully and must
imagine the story in the text when they read a text. So
they will easier to remember the text
d. The students should focus when study English. They
should not chat with others or be noisy during
teaching and learning process. So they can focus to
hear and follow the teacher‟s direction.
For other Researchers:
The next, can conduct a study about teaching reading with
other technique that make students enjoy and effective in
learning reading to increase their reading comprehension.
For example the others strategies, Synthesizing and others
those will take shorter time implementation in teaching
reading.
