Indonesian Junior High School Students Perception of the Use of Digital Storytelling In Supporting Narrative Writing Skill
Sumarni/02.184086 - Personal Name
This research aims to explore students' perceptions of the use of Digital
Storytelling in supporting narrative writing skills. The research was conducted
qualitatively by involving eighth-grade students at SMP Bone, using semi-
structured interviews and classroom observations as data collection instruments.
The results of the study indicate that Digital Storytelling has a positive impact in
four main aspects: understanding and planning of the story, student motivation
and engagement, development of creativity in writing, and student enthusiasm
and interest. Classroom observations supported the interview data, showing
increased focus, enthusiasm, and student engagement during the learning
process. Thus, Digital Storytelling is not only a learning tool but also a
pedagogical approach capable of creating an interactive, enjoyable, and
meaningful learning environment. These findings recommend Digital
Storytelling as an effective strategy for narrative writing skills in English
language classrooms.
A. Conclusion
The findings indicate that Digital Storytelling plays a multifaceted and
interrelated role in four main aspects, namely: understanding and planning the
story, motivation and emotional engagement, creative expression, and student
enthusiasm and interest. Through the integration of multimedia elements such
as images, videos, and audio, Digital Storytelling offers a more accessible,
interactive, and engaging approach.
First, in terms of story understanding and planning, the use of visual
and audio elements in Digital Storytelling helps students grasp narrative
structure more clearly. Students reported that these multimedia elements made
it easier for them to follow the story’s flow and understand the sequence of
events, which then served as a reference for writing their own stories.
Second, student motivation and emotional engagement significantly
increased through the use of Digital Storytelling. Both interview data and
classroom observations indicate that students are more motivated and
emotionally engaged when participating in Digital Storytelling-based writing
activities. Digital Storytelling transforms the typically tedious task of writing
into an enjoyable and inspiring activity. Students demonstrate increased focus,
effort, and perseverance—reflecting high levels of extrinsic motivation.
Third, Digital Storytelling significantly encourages students' creative
expression. Some students reported that they became more imaginative and
confident in expressing their stories in an engaging way.Digital Storytelling
provides a space where students are not only recipients of information, but also
39
creators of content, who can integrate their own experiences, perspectives, and
storytelling styles. This supports the development of creative thinking skills
and more authentic writing skills. Furthermore, students' enthusiasm and
interest in writing have significantly increased through the implementation of
Digital Storytelling. Students consistently report that the learning process has
become more enjoyable and engaging, particularly due to the inclusion of fun
and entertaining visual and audio elements.
Classroom observations also support these findings, as students appear
more focused, enthusiastic, and motivated when participating in learning with
Digital Storytelling. This behaviour indicates that Digital Storytelling has the
potential to enhance behavioural and emotional engagement, two crucial
components in fostering effective learning.
In summary, this study confirms that Digital Storytelling is not only a
learning tool but also a powerful pedagogical strategy capable of transforming
students' learning experiences in narrative writing.Through a fun,
communicative, and creative approach, Digital Storytelling helps overcome
various obstacles in the writing process, especially for students who are still
developing their writing skills. By improving understanding, maintaining
motivation, encouraging creativity, and fostering interest in learning, Digital
Storytelling enables students to produce more in-depth, interesting, and
meaningful writing.
B. Suggestion
The results of this study are expected to provide valuable insights for
various stakeholders. For teachers, this research highlights the potential of
digital storytelling as an alternative medium in teaching narrative writing. By
utilizing multimedia elements such as images, videos, and audio, teachers can
create a more engaging and supportive learning environment that helps
students understand narrative structure and develop their ideas more
effectively.
For students, the use of digital storytelling is expected to offer a fresh
and meaningful learning experience. It not only supports comprehension but
also boosts motivation and encourages creativity in writing, enabling students
to produce more expressive and engaging narratives.
For future researchers, this study serves as a foundation to explore the
implementation of digital storytelling in other educational contexts. Further
studies could examine its application in different genres, grade levels, or
investigate its long-term impact on writing development and learner
autonomy.
Lastly, for readers, especially those interested in improving narrative
writing skills, the findings of this study may serve as a useful reference. It is
hoped that this research can inspire readers to explore and apply more varied
and innovative strategies in teaching or learning writing, particularly through
the integration of technology and multimedia.
