An Analysis of Students’ Difficulties in Reading Comprehension at Junior High School

This research aims to determine the difficulties experienced by students in
reading comprehension and the factors that cause students' difficulties in reading
comprehension. This research used a qualitative method with three instruments,
namely observation checklist, tests, and interviews. This research involved 10
students of class VIII who were selected by purposive sampling. The results
showed that students had difficulty in reading comprehension. The researcher
found five difficulties experienced by students in reading comprehension,
including: determining main idea, understanding vocabulary, making inferences,
finding detailed information, and looking for references. Factors causing students'
difficulties in reading comprehension include: lack of interest in reading, poor
vocabulary mastery, lack of concentration in reading, lack of proper reading
comprehension technique, and also a less supportive classroom atmosphere for
reading comprehension.
A. Conclusion
Based on the results of the research and analysis in the previous chapter,
the researcher draws the conclusion that there are several difficulties and factors
that cause students' difficulties in reading comprehension. In this research, the
researcher found five points of students' difficulty in reading comprehension,
namely: determining main ideas, understanding vocabulary, making inferences,
finding detailed information, and finding references. The factors that cause
students' difficulties in reading comprehension include: lack of interest in reading,
poor vocabulary mastery, lack of concentration in reading, lack of proper reading
comprehension technique, and also a less supportive classroom atmosphere for
reading comprehension.
B. Suggestion
Based on the conclusions above, the researcher provides several
suggestions for teachers, students, and further researchers. The results of this
research are expected to provide information about what are the students'
difficulties in reading comprehension and the factors that cause these difficulties.
In addition, it can also be used as a reference for other researchers.
1. For teachers
Teachers should observe the difficulties faced by students when
reading texts in English so that they should help students solve their problems
in reading comprehension. After knowing some of the difficulties and the
factors that cause these difficulties, the teacher applied appropriate learning
methods well.
2. For students
The students have to increase their vocabulary, by reading English
textbooks, find the meaning, and memorize a lot of vocabulary. Students
should learn more about reading English texts to improve their reading skills
and practice how to understand English reading.
3. For the future research
The researcher consider that this research paper is still not perfect.
There are still many weaknesses related to the theory or method, maybe even
the idea is due to the limitations of the researcher's abilities. The researcher
hope that further researchers apply strategies or methods to provide solutions
to students' difficulties in reading comprehension.
