Developing Junior High School Students’ Reading Comprehension Through Read Aloud Method

This research discusses developing junior high school students‘ reading
comprehension through reading aloud method. This research used a quantitative method
using a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test. There are two
variables in this research. The dependent variable was students‘ reading comprehension.
The independent variable was the use of reading aloud method. The population of this
research was class VIII students of SMP 6 Bone for the 2022/2023 academic year, which
consisted of 130 students. The research sample consisted of 15 students‘ 6 male and 9
female from the VIII A of SMP 6 Bone. The result of this research indicate that reading
aloud method can be applied as a learning media to develop reading comprehension
students‘. It is proven by the mean score of post-test was significantly higher than pre-test
(82.67 > 58.33). it also can be seen from the result of t-test showed 0,000 which is less
than significant degree (0,05). This shows that H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected.
Therefore the researcher stated that reading aloud method is effective to be applied as a
learning media to students‘ develop reading comprehension.
A. Conclusion
Based on the data analysis in the previous chapter, it was concluded that
related to the problem of the lack of student interest in literacy in eighth grade
students' of junior high school. In this research, the researcher stated reading aloud
method could be used as an effective learning media in increasing students'
literacy skill. This research was implemented at the eighth grade of SMP 6 bone,
especially for class VIII A. Starting on 10th August 2023. The research was
carried out for six meetings, namely pre-test, treatments, and post-test. The results
obtained, the mean of the students' pre-test was 58.33 (poor classification),
increased to 82.67 (good classification) in the students post-test.
Furthermore, the calculated significance value is 0,000 which is smaller than
0.05). t count 5.938 and t table 0.6226, so t account 5.938 > t table 0,6226 so
based on the basis of decision making through comparison with t count and t table
it can be concluded that H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected. Therefore, the
results from this research improved significantly. It could be understood that
reading aloud was able to be applied as learning media for students' literacy skill.
B. Suggestion
After explaining the conclusions above, the researcher will then describe the
suggestions, the suggestions that the researcher intends are as follows:
1. Teachers can use the reading aloud method to improve students' literacy
skills.
2. Students are required to be more diligent and active in learning so that
the learning outcomes obtained are better.
3. For future researchers, the results of this research can be used as a
reference for conducting further research, especially research on reading
aloud method to develop students' literacy skills junior high school
context.
