Similarities and Differences in The Use of Language in English Learning on Male and Female Students

This thesis presents research on the similarities and differences in the use of
language in English learning on male and female students. This study used
qualitative research methods using three instruments, namely checklist observation,
interviews, and documentation. The study involved 5 male students and 5 female
students selected by random sampling and an XI class English teacher. The
researcher conducts data analysis through observations and interviews.
The results showed that there are similarities and differences in the use of language
in English learning on male and female students. The researcher has succeeded in
identifying 6 similarities and 9 differences in the use of language in English learning
on male and female students. The Researcher concluded that the differences in
language use between male and female students were more than the similarities.
Based on this research, the learning methods given to students must be adjusted to
the difficulties and needs of each male student and female student. The results of
this study are closely related to the concept of language and gender in the English
learning process.
A. Conclusions
Based on the results of research and analysis in the previous chapter,
researcher can draw a conclusion that there are similarities and differences in
the use of language in English learning on male and female students, which can
be seen as follows:
1. Researcher are able to identify 6 similarities in the research that has been
done, namely:
a. Male and female students alike rarely use English language when
learning English.
b. Male and female students alike rarely even use English to speak harsh
words.
c. Male and female students alike enjoy singing English songs.
d. Male and female students are equally shy about using English in the
classroom.
e. Male and female students are equally more likely to use Indonesian or
regional languages than English.
f. Male and female students alike often mix codes in speaking English.
2. Research also managed to find that there are differences in language use in
male and female students in the English learning process. Researcher
managed to identify 9 differences from the research that has been done,
namely:
a. Female students are more interested in learning and speaking English
than male students.
b. Female students likely said congratulations/thank you sentences more
often in English than male students
c. Male students have difficulty learning English in the vocabulary section
while female students have more difficulty in the grammar section.
d. Female students prefer to learn English by speaking practice, while men
prefer theory or even neither.
e. Female students tend to use English more often when greeting than male
students.
f. Male students have less interest in learning English, while female
students have an interest in speaking.
g. Male students have more difficulty than female students in learning and
using English.
h. Female students tend to be more active than male students during the
English learning process.
i. Female students prefer to learn and use English in certain media, such
as books, songs, movies, and so on, while male students use games or
sports.
These similarities and differences are related to each other, and cannot
be separated from aspects of language and gender. Based on the similarities
and differences from the research, researcher concluded that English educators
or teachers need to pay attention to the concepts of language and gender, one
of which is the aspect masculinity and femininity in determining learning
methods. Because from this research it has been proven that male students and
female students have differences in processing language, so difficulties and
problems arise due to learning methods what is given by the teacher is
equalized between male students and female students. The results of the study
were obtained from accurate and systematic data, so that the results obtained
were in accordance with the facts in the field.
B. Suggestion
Based on the findings that have been presented in the previous
discussion, researcher have several as consideration for teachers, students, and
students who will research next.
1. For English Teachers
From this research we can see that there are several similarities and
differences in the use of language in male and female students in the
process of learning English. With that, it is recommended to teachers or
educators to consider the learning process by paying attention in terms of
gardenia, because male and female students have Different interests in
learning. Teachers are advised to give more stimulus to male students so
that they can have a good interest in learning, especially in English. In
addition, the media used also needs to be considered, because the interest in
learning from male and female students can be influenced by the media
used.
2. For Students
In English language learning, students are advised to follow the
learning well. Build interest and passion from each one. For students who
do not have an interest in learning English, it is advisable to find other
preferred media so that interest in learning can increase. It is also
recommended to all students to continue to build their English language
skills both through the learning process at school and outside school.
3. For College Students
For students who will conduct research related to language and
gender, it is recommended to make this research as one of the references
in order to find more research results good and complex.
