Exploring the Causes of Senior High School Students‟ Difficulties in Recalling English Expressions Materials

This research objective to find out the causes of difficulties, solutions, and
efforts made by students and teachers in overcoming the causes of difficulties in
recalling the expressions materials. The participants of this research were 19
Senior High School eleventh grade students. This type of research is a descriptive
qualitative with a phenomenological research design that used two instruments,
which are questionnaire and interview. Purposive sampling technique was used to
select participants, that is seven students who had the most difficulties and one
English teacher to obtain data through interview. Data analysis techniques were
carried out in three stages, that is data reduction, data presentation, and
conclusion. The results of this research indicate that there are seven causes that
make it difficult for students, that is inadequate or inappropriate teaching,
irrelevant and unsuitable curriculum, classroom environment, loss of confidence,
emotional or behavioral problems, specific information processing difficulties,
and one of the most dominant causes, that is below average intelligence taken
from questionnaire data as well as students and teacher interview. In addition, two
solutions were also found by the teacher, that is giving advice and evaluation, and
the efforts made by students in the form of studying or memorizing the
expressions materials. Therefore, based on the results of this research there is
indeed a tendency that makes students experience difficulties because the causes,
efforts, and solutions provided by the teacher are not effective enough to
overcome difficulties in recalling the expressions materials.
A. Conclusions
Based on the results of the research that has been put forward in the
previous discussion, several conclusions can be drawn as follows:
1. The causes of students’ difficulties in recalling English expressions
material
Based on the questionnaire and interview that have been conducted
by the researcher, it was found several causes of difficulties in recalling
the expressions materials. Five of the ten variables used as research
references were the causes that made it difficult for students to recalling
the expressions materials.
Then, the researcher re-analyzed the results above, therefore it be
formulated that there are five causes that make it difficult for students, that
is inadequate or inappropriate teaching, irrelevant and unsuitable
curriculum, classroom environment, loss of confidence, emotional or
behavioral problems, specific information processing difficulties, and one
of the most dominant causes, that is below average intelligence taken from
questionnaire data as well as students and teacher interview. This item
indicated the inability of students in terms of understanding learning,
especially in the expressions materials.
2. The teacher solutions provided to overcome difficulties in recalling
English expressions materials for students
Recalling this expressions materials is closely related to the causes
of difficulties that have been found by the researcher. Therefore, the
solution is also related to the cause of the difficulties. The solution
intended here is giving advice to students and evaluation for an exam at
the end of the semester.
Therefore, the researcher concluded that the solutions given by the
teacher are returned to each student. If all of these aspects are not owned
by students, such as a lack of self-awareness to learn or develop
themselves, then no matter how big the stimulus given by the teacher will
still have no impact at all.
3. The students efforts to overcome the difficulties in recalling English
expressions materials
Based on the interview conducted with the seven most problematic
students, it was found that only five students had an effort while the other
two did not effort. In addition, some of these students did not all like
learning English. The researcher analyzed that students who have below
average intelligence tend to have difficulties in recalling the expressions
materials. Memory refers to students’ ability to mentally store things they
have learned before. However, if this ability is classified as low, then the
efforts made by students will still not be effective in being able to recalling
the expressions materials.
Based on the three points above, the researcher concluded that a cause that
makes it difficult for Senior High School students to recalling the expressions
material are inadequate or inappropriate teaching, irrelevant and unsuitable
curriculum, classroom environment, loss of confidence, emotional or behavioral
problems, specific information processing difficulties, and below average
intelligence. The lack of indications of the teacher’s solutions and student effort
tends to make students have difficulties to recalling the expressions materials.
B. Suggestions
Based on the conclusions previously put forward by the researcher
regarding the causes of difficulties in recalling the expressions material. The
suggestions from the researcher are as follows.
1. Some students do not have initiative. They do not seem to have any effort
to overcome the causes of difficulties related in recalling the expressions
materials. From the seven students with the most problems, only 5 students
had efforts and two of them were not effective at all. Therefore, further
action is needed to help students overcome the causes of these difficulties.
This can happen because some students are still ignorant and lack interest
in restudy.
2. It is hoped that teachers can do more research and learn about the
difficulties students experience while learning new or certain material,
such as the difficulties raised by the researcher in this research. Therefore,
the difficulties experienced by students can get the best solution and more
effective.
3. For future researchers, it is hoped that this research will conduct more in-
depth. Therefore, it can explore other causes of difficulties related to
expressions materials.
