Using Picture Cards as Learning Media of Guided Conversation in Teaching English Speaking Skill at SMPN 1 Mare

This research focuses on students‟ problems at SMPN 1 Mare related to lack
of english speaking ability. This research aims to find the improvement of students‟
english speaking skill using picture cards as media of guided conversation through
pedagogical approach. This research was conducted using quantitative research
methods with Pre-Experimental design and using one group pretest-posttest design.
The data were collected from 20 students of class VII (VII.1) by using a speaking test
In the form of English conversations. Thr tests were carried out to see whether the
Picture cards can improve students' English speaking skill. The results of data
analysis showed that the results of the post-test significant changes from the results of
the pre-test after doing the treatment given by researcher for 4 meetings, this is
proven through the t-test. The results of the t-test shows a significant value (2-tailed)
pretest-posttest is 0.000 which is smaller than 0.05 so that it can prove that there is an
increase in students' speaking skills after using picture card media in English
language learning. Therefore, hypothesis testing where the null hypothesis (Ho) is
rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Ha is acceptable if (2-tailed)
5% < 0.05.Using picture cards as a teaching media helps students to have better
speaking skills. The results of this field research also show that using picture card
media in teaching makes students easier to learn new vocabulary in English which
then helps them more easily in carrying out English conversations. Because in the
learning process students are happier and enthusiastic in learning.
A. Conclusion
Based on the result in findings of the research, it can be concluded that
using picture cards media can improve the students‟ speaking skill. The
improvement is shown from the result of students‟ speaking score in the post-
test. However, the success of picture cards as a media for teaching English
speaking skills cannot be separated from the instructional techniques used to
support the use of the media. Improvements in student speaking can also be
seen from student participation in the introduction of picture cards as a media.
This teaching media help students improve their speaking skills. Expand
students vocabulary related to the learning topic. So that the students do not
get stuck on what to say in speaking performance.
Students become excited and enthusiastic to learn vocabulary. Picture
cards can be used in pairs, so students can learn as their play and increase
students interest in learning vocabulary. Using Picture cards as a learning
media also makes students brave and is not embarrassed to come to the front
of the class.
B. Suggestions
Based on these results, it is recommended that middle school level
English teachers be able to use educational media to teach speaking skills.
This is because the use of picture cards as an educational media can be used in
conjunction with teaching techniques that can avoid student boredom. This
teaching media also helps students to formulate their ideas, which helps to
solve their speaking difficulties.
For future researchers, this action research may serve as a reference
when conducting similar research with different levels of students, different
materials, and different skills as the research focus. In addition, various
teaching techniques and strategies can be introduced and used to conduct
research related to this research , and can be redeveloped regardless of all
shortcomings.
