The Use of Plus Minus Interesting (PMI) Strategy to Develop Speaking Skills on Students SMPN 1 Sibulue

This research aimed to determine the development of students' English skills
in terms of speaking skills. This research was conducted using quantitative research
methods with Quasi- Experimental design. Data were collected from 66 students of
class VIII (VIII A and VIII B). 23 students were taken as the experimental class and
23 students were taken as the control class. Data collection is done by using a test;
pre-test and post-test as instruments. Tests were carried out to see whether the Plus
Minus Interesting (PMI) Strategy to develop students speaking skills. The results of
data analysis showed that in the pre-test the average value of the experimental class
was only 32.22 and became 76.52 in the post-test. Whereas in the control class, the
average pre-test score was 35.85 and the post-test was only 66.96. This shows that the
class that uses the Plus Minus Interesting (PMI) strategy as a treatment shows a
significant increase.
A. Conclusion
After conducting research at SMPN 1 Sibulue and after the data has
gone through an analysis process, it can be concluded that Interesting Plus
Minus is for developing students' speaking skills. This can be proven by
the fact that the average score of the experimental class experienced a
significant increase in the post-test score, while the average value of the
control class did not experience a significant increase. Post test scores
increased in the experimental class after being given treatment. In the
experimental class, the post test score increased to 76.52. whereas in the
control class the post-test value was only 66.96. This shows that the class
that uses the Plus Minus Interesting (PMI) Strategy as a treatment shows a
significant increase.
Based on the results of the independent sample t-test, if the sig. (2-
tailed) 0.05, so there is no significant difference between the learning
outcomes of the experimental class and the control class sig. value (2-
tailed) is 0.001. This shows that there are significant differences in
learning outcomes in the two classes because of the sig. (2-tailed) below
0.05. From these data it can be concluded that H 0 is rejected and Ha is
accepted. This proves that the Plus Minus Interesting (PMI) strategy has a
significant influence on students' speaking skills.
B. Suggestions
Based on the following conclusions, the researcher suggests the
following parties:
1. It is recommended that the teacher use the Plus Minus Interesting (PMI)
strategy to develop students‟ speaking skills
2. It is recommended for teachers to use English more often in teaching so
that students get used to listening and often give speaking practice to
students.
3. Hopefully this thesis can be useful for researchers and readers. It is hoped
that readers will learn about the use of Plus Minus Interesting (PMI)
Strategy in learning and teaching English. It is hoped that future
researchers will conduct research to find other significance of the Plus
Minus Interesting (PMI) strategy and can develop speaking skills on
students.
