The Effect of Word Tail Game toward Students’ Motivation in Learning Vocabulary

The objective of this research is to find out the effect of Word Tail Game
toward students’ achievement and motivation in learning vocabulary. The
researcher applied mixed method approach by using convergent parallel design.
Quantitative data was used to analyze the students’ achievement. While, students’
motivation was analyzed by using qualitative data. The participant was the second
grade students of SMPN 1 Ulaweng that consist of 20 students. The result of the
quantitative data showed that the students’ post-test score was higher than the pre-
test. Paired samples test showed that the Sig. (2-tailed) is lower than the significance
level (0,05). It indicates that Word Tail Game is effected the students’ vocabulary
achievement and effective to use in vocabulary learning. The result of qualitative
data analysis showed that most of the indicators as signs of motivated students were
achieved when the game was played. It means that Word Tail Game was able to
motivate students. The students’ statements in interview session also proved that
this game has a positive effect toward students’ motivation.
A. Conclusion
This research found out that Word tail game is a strategy in learning
vocabulary which was able to increase the students’ achievement in
vocabulary. The researcher concluded that, there were a significant
achievement of the second grade students’ vocabulary knowledge after
learning by using Word Tail Game in SMPN 1 Ulaweng. It is seen on the
result of pre and post-test. The students’ scores in the post test were higher
than their score in the pre-test. It means that Word tail game has a positive
effect toward students’ achievement in learning vocabulary.
Based on the result of observation and interview data. The researcher
found out that teaching vocabulary to the students by using this game has
affected their motivation. This game could be used to teach vocabulary
which is fun and enjoyable for students. Most of the motivation indicators
were showed by the students while playing the game. The students’
statement in the interview session also proved that they were interested and
felt fun to play the game. As the conclusion, teaching vocabulary by using
Word Tail Game were able to motivate the second grade students of SMPN
1 Ulaweng.
B. Suggestion
Based on the conclusion above, the researcher suggested several
things that is directed toward the English teacher, the students and, the next
researchers.
1. To the English Teacher
Word tail game could be used to teach vocabulary by the English
teacher. It could be one of the strategies to boost the students’ motivation in
learning vocabulary that could also increase their achievement. Because the
result of this research has found out that this game had a positive effect
toward students’ achievement and motivation in learning vocabulary. The
teacher are required to provide the game by making the simple rules. By
dividing them into groups, it would be more effective, enjoyable and,
interesting in the eyes of students.
2. To the Students
Learning vocabulary not always mean that memorizing is only the
best way to do. By using word tail game, the students would be able to
increase their vocabulary knowledge naturally in an interesting way. This
game was not only able to play with the leading of the teacher, it could be
played by the students own selves. They can play the game with their friends
or individually, in order to increase their English vocabulary.
3. To the Next Researcher
The objectives of this research were to explain the effect of Word
tail game toward students’ achievement and motivation in learning
vocabulary. The next researcher may do the same strategy in a different
contexts, this study can be one of the resources. They probably would find
different result especially dealing with motivation. It would not be a big deal
because motivation is described by using qualitative data. In qualitative
data, the result of certain place cannot be generalized for others place.
