The Use of Story Pictures as a Learning Media to Determine The Main Idea of Reading for Junior High School Students

This research discusses the use of story pictures as a learning medium with the aim of
finding out whether the use of story books in determining the main idea of reading is
effective or not. This research uses a pre-experimental design method. There are two
variables in this research, namely the independent variable and the dependent
variable. The population of this research was class VIII students at SMP Negeri 1
Watampone, totaling 224 students. The sample selected was 32 students using cluster
random sampling techniques. The instrument used in this research was 15 multiple
choice questions and the researchers tested it using SPSS. After being tested, the
results of this study showed that there was a significant difference between the
students' pre-test and post-test. Where the average pre-test score is 51.72 and the
average post-test score is 86.16. The t test value is greater than the t-table value
(28.619 > 1.696). And also the calculated significant value of 0.000 is less than 0.05.
This means that Ho is rejected and H1 is accepted. This means that there is a
significant positive effect on the use of story pictures in determining the main idea of
reading for class VIII Junior high school students
A. Conclusion
Based on the findings and discussion in the previous chapter, the
researcher concludes that The use of story books as a learning media to
determine the main idea of Reading junior high school students. It was
evident from the test results showing that there is a significant difference
between the students' pre-test and post-test. Where the average post-test score
of students was higher than the student's pre-test score (82.03 > 51.72). The t-
test value was higher than the t-table value (28,619 > 1,696). And also the
significant value calculated is 0.000 less than 0.05. It means that Ho is
rejected and H1 is accepted, so the use of story books can increase students’
abilityto determine the main idea in a reading text.
B. Suggestion
Based on the conclusions stated above, the researcher has several
suggestions for students, it is hoped that students can participate in the
learning process in class, are more motivated in learning English and focus
more on the teacher's explanations. Students are expected to more easily
understand the lessons given by the teacher. So students must be motivated to
learn English, especially in reading skills by using the storybook method as a
learning medium. Suggestions for teachers, teachers can use story books as
learning media to consider learning English in improving students' reading
skills. Suggestions for future researchers Hopefully it can help other
researchers to be able to use this reference as a guide for conducting further
research with the same technique or field related to story books through other
skills such as listening, speaking, reading and writing.
