Using Vocabulary Notebooks to Improve the Students' Vocabulary Acquisition at the Seventh Grade of Junior High School

This research discusses the acquisition of English vocabulary by using vocabulary
notebooks as a learning media at the seventh grade of SMPN 2 Watampone. This research
aims to find out Using Vocabulary Notebooks to Improve the Students' Vocabulary
Acquisition at the Seventh Grade of Junior High School. This research used a quantitative
method using a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test. There were
two variables in this research. The dependent variable was students' vocabulary
acquisition. The independent variable was the use of vocabulary notebook. The
population of this research was SMPN 2 Watampone consisting of 123 students. The
researcher used a purposive sampling technique. The sample consisted of 30 students
from the VII A of SMPN 2 Watampone. The research instrument used a test multiple
choice. The researcher provided pre-test, treatment, and post-test as a technique of data
collection. Data analysis technique use statistical calculations to test hypotheses by using
SPSS. The results of this research indicate that vocabulary notebooks can be applied as a
learning media for students' English vocabulary acquisition. It proved by the mean score
of post-test was significantly higher than pre-test (88.67 > 50.00). It also can be seen from
the result of t-test showed 0,000 which was < significance degree (0,05). This showed
that H 1 was accepted and H 0 was rejected. Therefore, the researcher stated that vocabulary
notebooks could be applied as a learning media for students' English vocabulary
acquisition.
A. Conclusion
Based on the data analysis in the previous chapter, it was concluded that
related to the problem of the lack of acquisition of English vocabulary in
seventh grade students' of junior high school. In this research, the researcher
stated that vocabulary notebook does effective as a learning media in
increasing students' English vocabulary acquisition. This research was
implemented at the seventh grade of SMPN 2 Watampone, especially for class
VII A. Starting on 26 th January 2023. The research was carried out for eight
meetings, namely pre-test, treatments, and post-test. The results obtained, the
mean of the students' pre-test was 50.00 (poor classification), increased to
88.67 (good classification) in the students post-test. Furthermore, the results of
t-test showed 0,000 which was < significance degree (0,05). It indicated that H 1
was accepted and H 0 was rejected. Therefore, the results from this research
improved significantly. It could be understood that vocabulary notebooks was
able to be applied as learning media for students' English vocabulary
acquisition.
B. Suggestion
Based on the conclusion above, the researcher will give suggestion to all
readers, teachers, students and other researchers, namely as follows:
1. For the teacher
English teachers must pay attention to the situation in the classroom
creatively and provide interesting and appropriate learning media to students
in the learning process so that students can be more active in learning.
2. For the student
The students should learn more about English. In learning English, the
students must be active in learning, especially in learning vocabulary to
improve English language skills.
3. For the other researcher
Based on the results of this research, it is hoped that other researchers
will prepare themselves to learn about research methodology. Because the
results obtained in this research were quite good, it can be used as a
reference for other researchers and hopefully other researchers will be able
to conduct research with better results.
