Students’ Perception in Learning Vocabulary Items by Using Authentic Material as a Learning Tool

The purpose of this research was to know Junior High School students' perception
toward the use of authentic materials in learning vocabulary items in the
classroom. This research used qualitative research. To select the representative
sample, a purposive sampling method was used. This research chose five students
from class VIII A at SMPN 3 Tellu Siattinge as a respondent on the use of
authentic materials in learning vocabulary items. The researcher used
observational field notes and a semi-structured interview to collect data. The data
analyzed by using reduction, display, and conclusion/verification. The results of
this research that students gives positive perceptions regarding the use of authentic
materials in learning vocabulary items in the classroom. Authentic materials
makes students active in learning vocabulary items. This was proven based on the
results of observation and interviews that students feel happy and comfortable
learning by using authentic materials because students become easier to
understand the lesson.
A. Conclusions
The students’ perception in learning vocabulary items by using
authentic material as a learning tool had positive perception. Students feel
comfortable, enthusiastic, active and find it easier to learn vocabulary items by
using pictures, the original objects and videos because it more clear and that
help them faster in understand the lesson. These are the types usually used by
teacher in teaching vocabulary items such as pictures, YouTube videos, songs,
audio, and original objects. Most of them struggle to learn through song
because their vocabulary was still limited, making it difficult to write,
understand, and learn through song.
B. Suggestions
Based on the conclusions, the researcher offer some suggestion that
can be a good distribution in order to increase the quality of English teaching
learning process and to improve the students’ ability in mastering English.
They are :
1. For English teachers, who want to improve their students' vocabulary, they
can use this learning tool well.
2. For students, the results of this research are expected to increase students'
vocabulary mastery by paying attention to everything that is ordered by the
teacher.
3. For other researchers, this research was conducted in junior high school. It
is suggested that the further research should be conducted in different level
of students.
