Students’ Perception on the Implementation of Movie as a Learning Media in Teaching Speaking in Junior High School

The objective of this research is to know how the students’ perception on the
implementation of movie as learning media in teaching speaking for junior high
school. This research is qualitative approach. The participants of this research were
20 students of ninth grade at SMPN 2 Watampone. In this research, the researcher
used two data collection instruments namely: interview and documentation. The
findings of those are the use of movies as teaching media indirectly has a positive
influence on students' interest and motivation to learning English, because students
feel very happy, interested, excited, and active in participating in the learning process
because they recognize that they get an interesting and different learning experience
from before. Therefore, the use of movies can be used as a teaching medium in a fun
audio and visual context that can access anywhere with various types of movie
choices to improve their skills. Students' perceptions on the use of movies also
produce other positive effects on the four components of speaking skills namely
pronunciation, grammar, fluency, and vocabulary.
Most of students gave the perspective that this media can help students in
improving their skills on two components of speaking skills namely vocabulary and
pronunciation but on the other hand, the two components of speaking skills namely
grammar and fluency have not fully become the focus of students in improving their
speaking performance but they admit to having the desire to learn them.
A. Conclusions
Based on the findings and discussion in this study, the author
concludes that students' perceptions of the implementation of movies as
learning media produce positive reactions. Where the movie is able to provide
positive effects for students in improving speaking skills so that they are able
to feel the benefits of the movie such as they feel happy, interested, excited,
play an active role, and they can also gain new experiences in using
technology. Students' perceptions of the use of movies also produce other
positive effects on the four components of speaking skills namely
pronunciation, grammar, fluency, and vocabulary. Most of students also gave
the perspective that this media can help students in improving their skills on
two components of speaking skills namely vocabulary and pronunciation.
Therefore, the use of movies can be used as a teaching medium in a
fun audio and visual context that can access anywhere with various types of

B. Suggestions
Based on the discussion and conclusions that have been described,
the suggestions that researchers can give such as:
1) For English Teacher
English teachers are expected to be able to overcome obstacles that can
hinder the English learning process by using learning media such as movies.
Teachers need to explore by utilizing various media and methods so that the
learning process runs smoothly.
2) For students
The school must be able to facilitate the English learning process, such
as by being given a special laboratory so that students become better and
maximize learning English. Schools should also be able to add meeting
schedules such as holding extracurricular English activities, so that students
can be more active and can hone their English skills. By using good media
and methods, it will be easier for students to understand the material and also
make students more interested so their learning motivation increases to learn
English.
