The Influence of Podcasts as Learning Media Pedagogy in Improving Senior High School Students’ English Vocabulary Knowledge

This research aims to improve the vocabulary of tenth-grade senior high
school students through podcasts as learning media pedagogy. This research focused
on pre-experimental research, one group pretest, and posttest. The Population in this
research was tenth-grade students at the State Senior High School 1 of Bone in the
2024/2025 academic year. The purposive sampling technique was used to take one
class as the research sample consisting of 35 students. Data obtained from vocabulary
test. The results of the research using t-test inferential analysis with the SPSS 25
version showed that there was a significant increase in vocabulary knowledge of the
students' mean scores between the pretest and post-test. The average value of
students' vocabulary increased by 38.80% from 67 in the pre-test to 92 in the post-
test. The calculated results of the research using t-test inferential analysis with the
help of the SPSS 25 version, show significance value was 0.000 less than 0.05 (P-
value = 0.000 < 0.05). Thus, the research hypothesis was accepted. This means that
using podcasts had a significant effect in improving the English vocabulary items of
tenth-grade students at State Senior High School of 1 Bone. In addition, the students'
motivation after using this strategy also increased. The result of the research showed
the effect of the podcast strategy in media pedagogy can improve students'
vocabulary knowledge.
A. Conclusion
Based on the findings and discussion of the research that has been
conducted, the researcher concludes that "There is an effect of using Podcasts
in improving the English vocabulary items of tenth-grade students at the State
Senior High School 1 of Bone”. The paired test results a significance value
(Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000. Since this significance value is less than 0.05, we can
conclude that the Null hypothesis (H 0 ) is rejected and the Alternative
hypothesis (H 1 ) is accepted.
Using Podcasts that were by the learning materials at the State
Senior High School 1 of Bone can improve student learning outcomes,
especially in terms of vocabulary mastery. The application of Podcasts to
develop students' vocabulary can provide new strategies for students to be
more active in learning to increase vocabulary mastery. Light learning
strategies make students not feel bored and stimulate their enthusiasm for the
learning process. In addition to improving in keeping memories, repeated
exposure to vocabulary in a variety of factors facilitates students' active use of
new terms in conversation. Students become more motivated and involved in
the learning process as a result of this exciting and enjoyable learning
environment. Additionally, Podcasts give students the chance to hear a variety
of linguistic nuances, expressions, and intonations, which enhances their
comprehension.

B. Suggestion
Based on these conclusions, the researcher provides some
suggestions that can be input to improve the quality of the English teaching
and learning process and improve students' knowledge of English. These
suggestions are:
1. For English Teachers:
a. For this type of learning, the teacher and students need devices with
reliable internet access. To get the intended results, the teacher's and
the student's operational proficiency must come first.
b. In learning vocabulary mastery, teachers must have different and
interesting teaching techniques so that they can become a special
attraction for students so that they are more interested in learning
English.
c. Teachers can develop more targeted activities that link listening to
Podcasts with specific vocabulary exercises.
d. It is important to provide consistent and specific feedback to students,
not only when listening to Podcasts but in all aspects of language
learning.
2. For Students:
a. Students are encouraged to keep listening to Podcasts as part of
language learning but also need to be active in other vocabulary
exercises.
b. Students can utilize technology such as vocabulary apps or online
resources to improve their skills independently.
c. Practicing speaking and listening to English regularly outside the
classroom is also important to improve vocabulary items.
3. For Future Researchers:
a. Conduct research with a larger sample size to increase statistical power
and generalization of results.
b. Investigate other factors that may have a stronger influence on
vocabulary mastery.
c. Using more detailed and objective vocabulary assessment methods to
get more accurate results.
Several supporting aspects of the results of the research may be
more complex and influenced by other factors that need further investigation.
By implementing these suggestions, it is hoped that the teaching and learning
of vocabulary can be improved, giving students a better opportunity to
develop their English skills thoroughly.
