Students’ Perceptions on the Use of Digital Storytelling to Learn Speaking Narrative Text at the Eighth Grade of MTS Darul Muttaqin Componge

The purpose of the research was to found out the students’ perceptions
toward storytelling in learning narrative text to teach speaking. The results of
this study could be used as consideration for teachers to apply simple but fun
learning media for students. This study used a descriptive qualitative method.
The participants of this study were the students’ of eighth grade at MTS Darul
Muttaqin Componge. The technique of data collections of this study were
questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire consisted of 15 questions related
to students’ perceptions on the use of storytelling in learning narrative text to
teach speaking. The results showed that overall the students had positive
perceptions towards storytelling in teaching and learning speaking. Most of them
stated that they enjoyable and helpful their study to use storytelling media. Many
students find it simple to respond to the questions, using the storytelling media,
and when asked about the issue. They stated that it depends on an internet
connection, and the mobile phone's restrictions.
A. Conclusion
The conclusion of this research was students’ perception on the use of Digital
Storytelling by English teacher at MTs Darul Muttaqin Componge. Most of the
students in the Eighth grade of MTS Darul Muttaqin Componge had positive
responses. The students worked together and made some video storytelling in
their mobile phone. In contrast, the researcher found that usually the students
seldom worked in pairs or groups during the teaching and learned process.
Most students in eighth grade of MTS Darul Muttaqin Componge stated that
they liked and happy to used Storytelling media. They also thought the
storytelling could be helps them in the learning processed specially speaking
skills. Many of the students felt easy to speech now because on the video there
was a text, so they could learned not also about speaking but listening, and
reading too. For the problem, they said it depends on the internet connections, the
limitation on their mobile phone.
In the research, the researcher found that although the questionnaire was
answered. They still could communicate face to face and from what the researcher
had seen. The teacher usually explains more to the students if they made mistaken
when their learning speaking.
B. Suggestion
Based on the conclusions previously stated by the researcher, namely was
using digital storytelling to teach speaking narrative text. Suggestions from
researchers were as follows:
1. For teacher
It would be better if the teacher could be always used storytelling media in
the class and not only for selected topic. Even though she could not used it in
every meetings, she still could used another video on youtube application to
evaluate students or even to upload the learning material. Meanwhile, in the
results of the study, learning motivation was good category.
2. For students
For students, storytelling could be a great online learning media that allow
the students to learn and improved their knowledge. It was enable the students
to deepen their understanding and also revise about the material of their study.
It could be also help to boost their motivations and enthusiasm because
storytelling was a fun learning platform that attract the students.
