Investigating Indonesian Junior High School Students English As A Foreign Language Speaking In Classroom Context

This study aims to investigate the context of English speaking for junior high
school students in classroom. The researcher applied a qualitative research. In data
collection, this research used two data collection procedure, namely: observation
and interview. The researcher randomly selected seven students to be interviewed.
Then the results of the data were analyzed using descriptive text analysis. Based
on the results of the research regarding the context of English speaking students, it
can be stated that the students do not show seriousness in speaking. The students
experience many problems such as anxiety, lack of confidence, fear, nervousness,
and also panic or shaking hands. This condition occurs because students do not
master the five components of speaking, namely vocabulary, grammar, fluency,
pronunciation, and comprehension so that, they cannot express themselves in
language. Not only that, in the context of the class students are not motivated to
learn to speak if, the class is not supportive (noisy), the class is not conducive, the
time is limited, the design of teaching and delivery of learning materials is less
effective. It can be concluded that the context of students‟ speaking is very
apprehensive. The students want to speak fluently, and master the five
components of speaking but in building their motivation they are lacking to learn.
A. Conclusion
Based on the findings and discussion in the previous chapter, the
researcher can conclude that there are something that bothers English Speaking
students in the class. Components of Language. Where, this language component
is very influential on students. Because, if the students do not master the five
components of language then they are difficult to speak English fluently. So that
the interaction between teachers and students does not go well.
On the other hand, Although the teacher have used combined language
between English and Indonesia in teaching but there are the students still bored to
study English and when the teacher give opportunity to speak English they cannot
express their own language.
In addition, there are also another conditions that make students
unmotivated to learn to speak, namely an unsupportive (noisy) class condition,
non-conducive classes, limited time, less effective teaching design and delivery of
learning materials.
So that, It can be concluded that the context of students speaking is very
apprehensive. The students want to speak fluently, and master the five
components of speaking but in building their motivation they are lacking to learn.
B. Suggestion
After closing the conclusions and conducting the research, the researcher
has some suggestions for students, it is hoped that students can be more
enthusiastic, confident in learning English, especially when learning to speak and
get rid of fear, anxiety, and nervousness. As well as students are expected to pay
more attention to the learning material presented so that in the future they can
speak well. Suggestions for teachers, hopefully in the future the teacher can know
more about the conditions and what students need when learning to speak and
hopefully in the future the teacher can provide a comfortable and conducive class.
Suggestions for future researchers, I hope this research can be useful for anyone.
